November 16th Meeting Town Hall Meeting: Web-Cam with TRIO International to be setup by: Jim Gleason Jacqui Scolaro & Randy Pelton December 21st Celebration of Life Party 1 t r a n s p l a n t n e w s From Amanda’s Journey: (*note: to see the full story: http:// amandasjourney.tumblr.com) 8/31/10: “The team is procuring the liver now. It’s not a small liver, but it’s perfect for me because they’re giving 1/4 of it to an infant! Someone’s liver is saving two lives today. 9/01/10: Out of surgery 1:30a.m. 9/07/10: Went home 9/14/10: Went shopping and got some really good bargains at Famous Footwear and Best Buy. Dropped little blue antiviral pill on floor which Haylie (dog) swallowed. Haylie spent the night in the hospital and returned home okay. 9/16/10: Lab tests at Liver Clinic 9/17/10: URGENT PRAYER REQUEST: “Apparently, my liver numbers were all over the place in yesterday’s labs, so they’re going to wait and see how Monday’s are, but this is a concern. We learned that 50% of all new livers undergo some kind of acute rejection in the first 6 months, and that’s definitely what this could be. If my numbers are still elevated, I will have to get an ultrasound (which sounds painful with my incision) and a liver biopsy, if rejection is confirmed, I’ll have to stay in the hospital for some heavy steroids and/or add more antirejection meds to my schedule.... So PLEASE lift us up this weekend and pray whatever’s going on in my body gets straightened out by Monday morning labs....Also, pray that we get through this with strength and grace.” t r a n s p l a n t n e w s News from members: Connie Armour: is doing well after having skin cancers removed. The one on her foot was the worst, so she is just recuperating. Her meds have changed and she has returned home and hopes to regain her strength. Katie Gavorcik I just found out from her son that she had a stroke and is in rehab at Mt. Alverna in Parma which is near his home. He expects her to leave the rehab facility next week and enter Assisted Living until she is well enough to return home. In addition to his life work as a physician, Dr Warburton was responsible for establishing North Canton Medical Foundation as a private Foundation to provide service to our community. With an emphasis on excellent medical care, education and charitable works. We all know of the challenges medicine faces today. This is particularly challenging for primary care, which was the basis in founding for North Canton Medical Foundation. Help us celebrate Dr. Warburton’s life and continue his vision and legacy by making a contribution to the Ralph T. Warburton Tribute fund. Your tax-deductible gift will help continue the work he began so many years ago. Tribute Fund for Ralph T. Warburton,M.D. (from NCMCF) With the passing of our founder, Ralph T. Warburton M.D. earlier this year, the North Canton Medical Foundation Board of Directors has established the Ralph T. Warburton Tribute Fund in his honor. This fund celebrates and supports Dr. Warburton’s vision of providing compassionate and excellent care for our patients and our community. We do not need to tell you of Dr.Warburton’s compassion and expertise as a physician. t r a n s p l a n t n e w s Thank you in advance for your support and generosity. NORTH CANTON MEDICAL FOUNDATION NOTE: AKRON-CANTON TRIO HAS DECIDED TO DONATE $50.00 IN HIS MEMORY. (Submitted by Bruce Hord from Ian Sample, science correspondent guardian co uk, 9/15/10) Doctors are to begin a trial of a drug treatment that could double the time transplanted organs survive in the body. The 20-minute procedure effectively coats donor organs in a protective shield that stops them from being rejected by the patient’s immune system. The treatment is expected to prolong the time that organs remain healthy in patients’ bodies and also increase their shelf life, so they can be stored for longer or transported further before being used. If the treatment works, it could ease the burden on organ transplant services, which face a gap between the supply and demand for donor organs. Last year, 8,000 people were on the waiting list for kidney transplants in Britain, but only 2,500 took place. In the past year, 448 patients have died while waiting for a donor organ. People who survive transplants must take drugs to suppress their immune systems, but the body still reacts to cause transplants to fail sooner than they should. The new treatment developed by researchers at King’s College London, is based on the defense mechanism healthy organs use to shield themselves from the immune system. Protein molecules that dot the surface of organs keep the immune system in check and prevent it from launching an attack. These proteins are lost when organs are removed from the body, handled and stored on ice. The King’s team found a way to manufacture these proteins in the laboratory and produced a drug called mirococept, which can be fed into the organ with a drip. Studies suggest the procedure could extend the life of an implanted kidney by around seven years. “If the treatment goes to plan, it can almost double the life of a graft.” said Steven Sacks, director of the MRC Centre for Transplantation. The scientists believe the treatment will also extend the shelf-life of donor organs, increasing the time they survive outside the body from no more than 24 hours to several days. this could reduce wastage and double the number of organs that work properly once they are transplanted, doctors said. In early tests, only a fifth of organs worked properly after being stored on ice for 16 hours, compared with 50% of those treated with mirococept. A recent pilot study on 16 patients found it was safe to use. The group now plan to recruit more than 300 patients for a trial that will take place at transplant centers across the country. The trial is expected to begin next year and will investigate how much drug organs need to be treated with to protect them. If it is successful, doctors will need to do a final, much larger trial to study how much longer treated donor organs survive in patients. Professor Sacks said the treatment could be available in hospitals in five years. Patients who receive donated organs treated with mirococept will still need to take drugs to suppress their immune systems, but doctors said an aim of their research was to see if the use of current drugs, which can increase a patient’s risk of cancer, can be reduced. “Any treatment that can prolong the life of organs means there will be more organs available for people on waiting lists,” said Martin Drage, a consultant transplant surgeon at Guys and St Thomas’ hospital, London. Dr Drage said the treatment was likely to be particularly useful for kidney and pancreas transplants, but may also prolong the useful life of liver and other organs. ************ Community Open House at LifeBanc’s new location 4775 Richmond Road Cleveland, OH 44128-5919 on Tuesday, September 14th (by Mary Fread) It certainly was worth taking a vacation day to tour their beautiful new building and meet some of their wonderful employees.
