MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Germantown Village Board rejected a proposal Dec. 16 to have the village purchase the Blackstone Creek Golf Course for the purpose of developing the property as park space. An offer to purchase 153 acres at a cost of $5,350 per acre was made to the village by course owners. While the board had the option of discussing the offer in closed session, the board voted in open session not to pursue the offer. During board discussion, several trustees indicated they were wary of an additional expanse at this time. Trustee Terri Kaminski said she is "hard pressed" to remove any items from the village's capital expense list. "I don't think we can afford this," Kaminski said of the golf course offer. "I can't find any cuts (from the capital expense budget)." Kaminski added that if the village has to repair Donges Bay Road on its own starting in 2015 instead of receiving funding from state sources, that and any impact of Obamacare could be additional expenses the village could be facing. "If we had some of these things taken off our docket by 2015, I would feel comfortable saying let's go get a park," Kaminski said. She added that the site is a perfect place for a park. "It comes down to if we can afford it," she said. The board action came after several residents spoke in opposition to the offer. Resident Bill Steitz said he objected to the cost for renovating a golf course to a park even as the village had problems maintaining roads and other infrastructure. “It’s not good use of taxpayer money at this time. There are higher priorities that should be done,” Steitz said afterward. When interviewed afterward, Steitz also said the site floods several times annually and a result the residents couldn’t use the area at those times. Resident Dan Wing, when interviewed after the vote, said he opposed borrowing money for recreational land while there is a backlog of roads that are in need of repair. He also said the village “can’t maintain the parks that we have.” Wing also objected to the cost of the maintenance and developing the park. “Costs are a major factor here,” he said. Village President Dean Wolter said he sees the land as an opportunity to draw people from the freeway toward the village's downtown. "I also see it as a way to spur some development on that property as well," Wolter said. There was previously an offer from the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) to purchase the land as part of its "greenseams" initiative . Regarding the current offer, Wolter said the village discussed options for purchasing the land in several closed sessions since May. A formal offer to purchase the land was made to the village earlier this fall, which had a 45-day window to respond. During questioning about potential costs for maintaining the property and developing the plan for a park, Wolter cited information from village staff indicating that full service for mowing the property and tree work would cost $1,200 per week during the summer months, “midlevel” service of mowing once a month and no trimming would cost $521 weekly while low level service of mowing once a year and no general maintenance would cost $340 weekly during summer months. Trustee Shane Daniels said “in principle, it’s a good idea” but cited objections from residents over the potential purchase. He asked if the village could go to referendum to get resident input on the proposal. “Maybe this is a big enough ticket to bring to the community for a full decision,” Daniels said. Wolter replied that it is possible for the April election. However, the village is dealing with a private land owner and it would be up to him if he wanted to hold on and wait for the results of the question. Trustee Jeff Werderman said a five to 10 year plan is needed to determine the cost to taxpayers. Besides the mowing costs, the village would also have to determine the costs of developing the site into a park. Werderman also said the potential costs of reconstructing Donges Bay Road led him in the direction of opposing the land purchase. Wolter said he supported the request of the land as a way of developing a “community center” that will have access to a waterway and can draw people to a downtown area. Wolter cited Waukesha and Chippewa Falls as communities that used waterways to develop downtown area. Troy Schmidt, a co-owner of the Blackstone course, noted that Blackstone officials came to the board with a proposal two years ago that involved MMSD in which the agency would purchase 131 acres and turn it over to the village. While the village first supported the project, the board later asked for a proposal that did not involve the MMSD. “We’ve done what we felt what we were asked to do,” Schmidt said. The motion to not purchase the site was approved 8-1, with Wolter voting against the motion. WCYHA Squirt "B" team dominates Mosinee tourney Shutouts are a part of hockey, but shutting out your opponents for an entire tournament is a feat all its own and one that is shared by the Washington County Youth Hockey Association's Squirt "B" team after their tournament championship in Mosinee December 14-15. "This team is really rolling and has gelled very nicely," said Tom Postulka, Assistant Coach for the Squirt "B" Ice. "This is phenomenal achievement for any team, let alone it being these kids first ever tournament." The Ice opened up tournament play with a convincing victory over the tournament hosts the Mosinee Pride 10-0. In semifinal play, the Ice was pitted against a tough Green Bay Bobcats team. The defense of the Ice and goalie Kami McCardle proved to be too much for the Bobcats leading the Ice to a 3-0 victory. In the championship the Ice coasted to an impressive 12-0 victory over the Eagle River Eagles. "This was a great learning experience for our team," Postulka added. "This isn't something that happens too often and I'm happy these kids got this experience." The Washington County Youth Hockey Association is a private non-profit hockey association. Through a dedicated staff of certified coaches the WCYHA strives to teach youth sportsmanship, ice skating, teamwork, build self-esteem, and develop discipline. MCKILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The winning continues for the Germantown boys basketball team. The Warhawks broke the Wisconsin high school record for most consecutive wins Dec. 17, defeating Milwaukee Lutheran 90-63. The game was the 63rd consecutive win for Germantown, a streak which started with a 73-58 win over Brookfield Central Nov. 29,2011. Germantown broke the record set by Whitefish Bay Dominican from 1977-80. Germantown tied the record with a 75-29 rout of Dominican at the NY2LA Classic Dec. 14. For the record breaking game, Milwaukee Lutheran led for most of the first quarter and held a 23-19 lead following two three-point baskets by Jevon Smith. But Germantown's Evan Wesenberg responded with two layups to tie the score at the 4:44 mark of the second quarter. Kyle Theis gave Germantown the lead for good when he made a free throw at the 2:44 mark and then converted a basket off a missed free throw seconds later. "These games are never easy and it's never over until it's over," Germantown Coach Steve Showalter said when asked if he was concerned about the close score (36-31) at halftime. Germantown broke the game open with a 102 run to take a 55-37 lead following a layup by Lamonte Bearden at the 2:45 mark of the third quarter. Germantown led by as much as 32 points until the Red Knights scored several points in the closing minutes of the game. "We made a run and we played some defense and we we're coming this way fast," Showalter said, referring to the south end of the court. "Once we started going this way fast, we were tough to beat." Wesenberg and Showalter both led Germantown with 17 points while Lamonte Bearden added 16 points and Brian Bearden added 15 points. In comments to the crowd after the game, Showalter added that the record "is not just a tribute to this team and these boys here, this is a tribute to all the kids that have busted their rear ends here in this gym for us and all the kids that got this thing started and have made it a lot easier on the some of rest of these guys. They've done a great job and we hope to keep making you guys proud and making you guys happy and keep this thing going." Afterward, Coach Showalter explained the different reaction between continuing a winning streak during the regular season as opposed to winning a state championship. "When you win a championship you're done Germantown’s Jake Showalter(center) attempts a free throw after Milwaukee Lutheran was assessed a technical foul Dec. 17. Photo by Thomas J. McKillen. for the year and you go home and celebrate," Showalter said. "Well, tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m. we're going to be in here trying to get better. There's a sense of relief with that number (breaking the consecutive winning streak record), but we've got a lot of work to do yet." Hamilton rebounds after Central loss The Hamilton boys basketball team fell behind early to Brookfield Central Dec. 13 and spent the rest of the night catching up, falling to the Lancers 70-60. Central scored the first 10 points of the game before Drew Patterson converted a layup with 2:11 left in the first quarter. The Lancers expanded their lead to 17-4 after Brad Newman converted a free throw while being fouled on a layup with 48 seconds left in the quarter. Hamilton rallied and trailed by only four points at halftime. A basket by Brady Ellingson made the score 33-32 at the 6:55 mark of the third quarter. Central answered by scoring the next 10 points and held a lead between five and 11 points throughout the third quarter. Hamilton couldn't get any closer than seven points the rest of the way. Afterward, Hamilton Coach Andy Cerroni noted his team missed some baskets early in the game as Central opened its first lead. "They got that lead and we battled back. I'm so proud of our kids, they just started to get it and play and not force things," Cerroni said. "When you make shots, that makes a difference." Cerroni said his team put another shooter on the court early in an attempt to answer Central. Cerroni also noted that Central converted free throws down the stretch to put the game away. Ellingson led all scorers with 26 points. Hamilton rebounded with a 53-38 win over Wauwatosa East Dec. 17. Ellingson led all scorers with 33 points. The book is made personal through rarely-seen photos provided by people in the community sharing their family's story. The 128-page, 8-by-11-inch hard cover book, printed on high quality, durable paper, sells for $55, tax included. It is available at the publisher, Allied Digital Photo, at German Glass and Gifts, and at Sinter Klausen Christmas Shop and through www.bastbellmuseum.com, with an additional shipping fee of $5.
