School Board concerned about late resignations
The Germantown School Board approved the resignation of six staff, off of whom resigned after Aug. 1. Under district policy, resignations received after Aug. 1 will result in a $750 severance charge. That amount increases to $1,000 for any resignation submitted after Aug. 15. According to information from the district: •Kristin Wisely, a cross categorical teacher at County Line School submitted her letter of resignation Aug. 13; •Tiffany Bowdish, third grade teacher at Amy Belle, submitted her resignation Aug. 11; •Kathy Wurzer, cross categorical teacher at County line, resigned Aug. 19; •Meg Clark, a French teacher at the high school, resigned Aug. 22; •Heidi Henderson, music teacher at Rockfield, resigned Aug. 23; and •Katy O'Sullivan, gifted and talented coordinator, resigned Aug. 26. In response to the late resignations, School Board President Robert Soderberg asked if the positions can be filled within the next week. “It would appear in the era of post-Act 10 that we have districts cherry-picking our people," Soderberg said. Director of Human Resources Cynthia Coley said there is a "domino effect" of other districts seeking to fill their own late openings. She said resignations typically occur toward the end of June and just before school begins. Coley noted that last year she vowed the district would not be in a position where it would have to make late hires.

Germantown board approves pilot program for broadcasting four football games

Germantown High School football fans who can't see the first four games of the season in person will have another option for following the action. The School Board approved a pilot contract with High School Cube, a Chicago-based firm, to broadcast the first four games of the season on the company's Web site. The company will keep games posted for two weeks. Athletic Director Jack Klebesadel said the district will not be charged for the service and the district will have final say over advertisers. According to information from High School Cub, the firm already bars ads for online gambling, adult content, online pharmacy, and retail tobacco and alcohol sites. High School Cube will keep 80 percent of the revenues from advertising while the school district would get 20 percent. Klebesadel said the district will review a list of potential advertisers that High School Cube would want to pursue for the online telecasts. He added that it is a pilot program for the first four football games of the season. Superintendent Jeffrey Holmes said the proposal "will allow us to be more modern in our presentation of school activities which would start with athletics." Company employees would run the telecasts but students could shadow the employees under the pilot. In the long run, students could be trained to use the equipment for events. Klebesadel added that the broadcasts are for regular-season events only, as the WIAA holds the broadcast rights for postseason competition. Etc. •The board selected Plunkett Raysich Architects LLP to perform a basic facility study and a security and safety needs study at an amount not to exceed $24,500. •The board approved selling 166 laptops and 223 desktop computers to Insight Systems Exchange at a cost of $13,215. Board member Bruce Warnimont asked if there was any discussion about offering the items to district families. Director of Technology Marc Gabrysiak said the district has considered selling the items to staff but has shied away from that option due to questions about support for the equipment. Holmes added that the equipment that is being sold is outdated. Gabrysiak noted that the harddrives on the computers will be cleared. Holmes said that the cleared drives would require new programs to be installed. The board approved the sale 6-1, with Warnimont voting in dissent. •Holmes said he along with Building and Grounds Director Don Erickson and Business and Auxiliary Services Director Ric Ericksen will be reviewing historical evidence prior to coming to the board with a recommendation for an emergency fund. Holmes said the review would involve determining trends as far as what has occurred to require an emergency use of funds. •The board agreed to drop voluntary long-term care insurance after no employees signed up for the option last year.

The following report was taken from records at the Germantown Police Department. Disorderly conduct • A male subject was taken into custody for disorderly conduct and resisting at 2:35 p.m. Aug. 11 after causing a domestic disturbance with a woman and her daughter at a residence, from which he was banned, in the W15000 block of Vienna Court. Drug possession • A male subject was taken into custody for possession of drugs at 4:03 p.m. Aug. 11 after behaving in an intoxicated and disorderly manner at a residence in the W15000 block of Vienna Court. Operating while intoxicated • A male subject was arrested for operating while intoxicated-drug related at 9:39 p.m. Aug. 15 in the W14000 block of Raintree Drive. Germantown police made contact with the man after Menomonee Falls officers notified them of a possible drunk driver they were pursuing. Retail theft • A female subject was taken into custody for retail theft at Fleet Farm, N96 W8200 County Line Rd., at 5:11 p.m. Aug. 15. Theft • A male resident reported the theft of a Proscan tablet from his home in the N12000 block of Century Lane Aug. 13. • Two rings and two pearl necklaces were reported stolen from a home for sale in the N13000 block of Country Aire Drive Aug. 12 while being shown by a real estate agent. Underage tobacco • An employee of Quick Plaza, N12 W21760 Holy Hill Rd., was cited at 2:36 p.m. Aug. 14 for selling tobacco to an underage subject. • A female employee of Walmart, W190 N9855 Appleton Avenue, was cited at 1:55 p.m. Aug. 14 for selling tobacco to an underage subject. Vandalism • A windshield on a vehicle parked in a driveway at a residence in the W14000 block of Ridgefield Road was smashed during the overnight hours of Aug. 16-17. Warrant • A male subject was taken into custody on a Germantown warrant at 12:54 a.m. Aug. 16 following a traffic stop at Francese Drive and Pilgrim Road.

Green is the new pink and blue
The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) is pleased to announce Baby Safety Month 2013 – Green is the New Pink and Blue! Green programs have been in effect for years but it wasn’t until 2002, when the Go Green Initiative started, that the greater population started taking a closer look at the chemicals used in common household products, as well as taking steps to reduce carbon footprints. This has spawned an entire industry of green and sustainable baby products that only continues to grow. Parents are now looking for information on how to buy, where to buy, and what to buy in order to raise a healthy family and stick to eco-friendly practices and products. Always at the forefront of the juvenile products industry, this year’s Baby Safety Month theme reflects JPMA’s commitment to safe products and industry developments. Green is the New Pink and Blue focuses on: • what parents need to know about chemicals in baby products (facts vs myths) • green initiatives manufacturers are undertaking • safety concerns with second hand products • product recycling programs /how to properly discard products "Raising children takes care and on going education to ensure the first years are happy and healthy," remarked Julie Vallese, Managing Director of Government and Public Affairs for JPMA. "It’s important to know how to properly use any juvenile product, new or used, including following product instructions trusting your instincts and using common sense when caring for baby at all times." A comprehensive online guide for green parenting is coming soon via www.jpma.org. About Baby Safety Month Baby Safety Month started in 1983 when JPMA initiated "Expectant Mother’s Day." In 1986, it was extended to a week long celebration, until 1991, when JPMA sponsored the first "Baby Safety Awareness Month."
Industry group enhances certification program
The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association(JPMA), a non-profit association dedicated to promoting the industry and the safe selection and use of juvenile products, announced enhancements to its ongoing and industry-leading Certification Program. "JPMA Certification guarantees the product you’re investing in meets the highest government, industry and retailer standards," said Michael Dwyer, CAE, executive director of JPMA. "Consumers should look for the JPMA Certified seal when purchasing products for their children." The JPMA Certification Program was initiated in 1976 with a program for high chairs and has grown to cover 23 product categories. The program has always, and continues to be verification that a product sample has been laboratory tested and meets the ASTM (formerly American Society for Testing and Materials) and mandatory government testing requirements. JPMA has enhanced the certification program by now also requiring State, Retailer, and CPSIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act) testing requirements culminating in the most comprehensive program in the baby product industry. "JPMA Certification helps to ease new parent worries and make the product selection process easy." added Dwyer. "Keeping children safe is the highest priority for parents and caregivers. It’s the highest priority for JPMA, too." How will you know if a product is JPMA Certified? Look for the JPMA Certification seal on product packaging to make sure your products meet the latest safety standards. Dental Professionals celebrates 30th anniversary
Founded by Dr. Thomas Albiero on Aug. 1st 1983, Dental Professionals–located at N112W16760 Mequon Rd, Germantown–is excited to celebrate its 30th anniversary. Dr. Albiero built a strong foundation on which the practice could grow. All of his original employees are still with the practice and many others have been members of the team for over 15 years. Since the practice's inception, three partners have also joined Dental Professionals, Dr. Keith Templin (1991), Dr. Cynthia Jakusz (2002), and Dr. Chad Zambon (2003). Together the four partners have grown the practice which now includes a team of 24 employees. In 1983, Dental Professionals made a commitment to provide the highest quality of care and focus on patient relationships. As a result, we have been rewarded with wonderful patients. Dental Professionals considers themselves one big family and the patients as an extended family. It is important to them to keep this family atmosphere as they grow. With that, Dental Professionals would like to announce that they are expanding. The location will remain the same, but a new front entrance (just east of the current entrance) will be used around the first of the year. Construction has already begun as they remain open in their current home. They look forward to being able to serve their future patients with more treatment rooms, a larger and more comfortable reception area, and many additional technological advances. They would like to thank Germantown, Menomonee Falls, and the surrounding communities for their support over the past 30 years and look forward to better serving them in the years to come. Student revamps halftime room for Eagle Scout project

Clay Knapp's teammates on the Germantown High School football team will benefit from his Eagle Scout project, while several of them also assisted with the project. Knapp, a linebacker with the team, reworked the room used by the team during halftime. The room is located on the lower level of the Datka Stadium concession stand. Knapp has been involved with Boy Scouts for approximately 12 years as a member of Troop 175, which is chartered by St. James Church in Menomonee Falls. For his project, Knapp initially had another football-related idea but then focused on making improvements to the halftime room after talking with high school Athletic Director Jack Klebesadel. Starting in early August and going for a two week period, Knapp oversaw 41 volunteers — including other scouts, scout leaders, football players and friends — who helped refurbish the room. The Germantown Gridiron Club donated enough money to cover all costs while Knapp received a discount from SherwinWilliams that allowed him to purchase paint and stay within budget. The project was completed on Aug. 20. "The plan was to design a room that would make the space more enjoyable and help build team spirit," Knapp said about the project. "The Eagle project
involved cleaning the room out, moving the dry erase boards, repainting the room with new graphics and adding the team values, mission statement, and a generic ‘team’ banner. We also built a few new benches, fixed a few of the old ones, and painted them all blue and added the Germantown logo." A hawk design that was already on the wall was preserved and beefed up with the addition of a heavy black outline to it. He added that the core values for the team will go around the room and will change with each season. Knapp added that after committing to the project, it took approximately two weeks to finalize all approvals to proceed. The project will complete a goal Knapp sought when he crossed over from Cub Scouts into Boy Scouts. Knapp said at that time it became his goal to secure the Eagle Scout ranking. "This project was a great experience that gave me an opportunity to further build my leadership skills," Knapp said. He added that for a time during his teen years he questioned scouting, but that has changed. "It was actually an amazing part of my life and I hope that other scouts will stick it out like I have," he said. I think my experiences in scouting have helped me earn the leadership position I now have as one of the captains on the football team. This is something I will never forget and I am proud of myself and all the volunteers that made this project happen."

Couple celebrating 65th wedding anniversary
Robert and Dorothy Milbrath will be celebrating their 65 wedding anniversary Sept. 4. They were married at St. Huberts Church in Hubertus WI and resided in Menomonee Falls until retiring from the Park Department (Robert) and E.F. Brewer (Dorothy). They then resided on Crooked Lake for 22 years until returning to Menomonee Falls, two years ago. They are lifelong active member of the Menomonee Falls American Legion and St Mary's parish.There will be a blessing of the marriage at St. Marys on Sept 1 at the 10:30 Mass and a large family celebration on Sept 28th. They have three children - George (Kathy) Milbrath, Eau Claire; Steve (Mary) Milbrath,Richfield; and Debbie (Dean) Anderson, Germantown They also have nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Dear Dr. Winter, I was wondering if most people are happy with their dentures? Do they eat well? I have 6 veneers that have failed. I would like to have all my teeth pulled and have dentures! How much does this cost and will I be happy? Dear Janet, I am sorry you are having problems. From your question, I am not sure I fully understand what you are going through. You may have a bite problem, a skeletal problem or a cosmetic issue or a combination of the above. First, you should realize that If you can keep your teeth you will chew more efficiently, eat better, extract better nutrition from your food and be happier in the long run. People that have had dentures for 5 years typically chew with one fifth the biting force of people that have their natural teeth. Second, dentures don't work like teeth. They are big pieces of acrylic with denture teeth. They block the roof of your mouth from taste sensations and they can dislodge with sneezing, yawning or chewing. Over time they will contribute to further deterioration of the underlying bone through movement of the dentures and friction. So if your situation can be identified, and fixed, that is what you should do. It is very easy to think that pulling teeth and getting dentures will be a solution but in reality they render you a dental cripple with a prosthesis that must be relined or remade every 3-5 years as your gum tissues change. Then if you want to replace these dentures with implant retained dentures or bridges it can be a long and expensive course of treatment compared to saving your natural teeth. So your dentist should evaluate your bite and cosmetics from before your veneers were done and try and recreate the situation where you were comfortable and happy. We would be happy to see you for a second opinion. Dear Dr. Winter, My wife just had grafting to her gums because they were receding. Her dentist says she now needs to have braces to prevent the recession from coming back. Is this common practice? It seems a bit illogical, as her teeth are pretty straight. Thanks. common practice in dentistry. The reason for the recession was probably discussed with your wife prior to the surgery. If the positioning of the teeth contributed to this recession than an overall plan to prevent the recession from returning-ie: braces- was probably discussed. Certainly your wife can always say no to the braces but if the dentist feels this is necessary to prevent a recurrence it seems wise to consider this option. It is also possible that judicious reshaping or recontouring of the teeth could decrease forces that may have accelerated the recession. Kiwanis Tailgate to honor Germantown teams, coach Sept. 8
A tribute to Germantown High School's two Wisconsin WIAA Division II State Championship teams will be sponsored by the Kiwanis Club–as part of the annual Kiwanis’ Tailgate–at Aldo's Pizza & Pub, located at W156 N11058 Pilgrim Road in Germantown, on Sunday, Sept. 8 at noon. Coach Phil Datka will be honored for his achievements in leading the teams to those championship titles. Datka won two WIAA State Football Championships while coaching at Germantown High School during his career. The Warhawks were state champs in 1998 and in 2003. Datka's 1998 team went undefeated, 14-0 on their way to the State championship. Datka is a legendary figure in Germantown. He was inaugurated into the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in March of 1998. During his career at Germantown High School he served as High School Principal and Athletic Director. The members of the 1998 and 2003 teams have been invited to a reunion by Datka. Along with Datka they will be the honored guests of the Kiwanis Tailgate. The event is open to the public. All Germantown residents are welcome to help honor their team and enjoy the Green Bay Packer-San Francisco 49er game. Germantown residents may participate in the tailgate activities, including a 50/50 raffle, plus auctions on a team-signed Packer football and future Packer game tickets. Attendees should wear their Packer gear to compete in the "Ultimate Packer Fan" competition. All monies raised will go to support local Kiwanis sponsored events for the Germantown community.

Germantown announces temporary limits on watering lawns Village of Germantown officials announced limits on lawn watering Aug. 29. Under the restrictions, residents who have odd-numbered residences are to water their lawns only on odd-numbered days while residents with even-numbered residents are to water their lawns on even-numbered days. “The Department of Public Works also requests residents on private wells to voluntarily restrict lawn watering to conserve aquifer resources your neighbors may share. Should there be any questions regarding the lawn watering ban please contact the Germantown Department of Public Works at (262) 250-4721,” the agency said a statement sent out to local media. “These restrictions do not apply to other outside uses of water” such as tree or garden watering. Early lead lifts Warhawks past Hartford
Germantown jumped out to an early lead against Hartford, lifting the Warhawks to a 24-7 win over the Orioles Aug. 29. Germantown got on the board first on a 34-yard field goal by Carter Schmitz. Joe Lemerond got into the end zone on a 4-yard run at the 6:14 mark. Lemerond finished the first quarter scoring with a 88-yard run with 41 seconds left in the quarter. Hartford took advantage of an interception to begin a 4-play drive at their own 36yard line. A long pass play from Tommy Noenning to Ethan Willer put the Orioles at the Germantown 1-yard line, and Noenning ran the ball at the 9:33 mark of the second quarter. Germantown finished the scoring with a six-play drive that started at their own 22yard line and ended with 5-yard pass play from Dwayne Lawhorn Jr. to Nick Holcomb with 2:17 left in the third quarter. Lemerond led all rushers with 100 yards in 21 carries. Lawhorn completed 7 of 14 passes for one touchdown and the interception. Afterward, Germantown Coach Jake Davis said he appreciated how he was been able to rely on the defense throughout the game to keep Hartford at bay. Germantown scored early and often against Greenfield on the way to a 49-7 win at Greenfield Aug.23. Germantown took the lead against Greenfield Aug. 23 before its offense ever took the field as Quinn Fliss took the opening kickoff for Germantown and returned it for a touchdown 37 seconds into the game. "It definitely helps to build momentum," Germantown Coach Jake Davis said afterward. After forcing Greenfield to punt on its first possession, Germantown mounted a fiveplay drive that ended with a touchdown by Dwayne Lawhorn at the 7:24 mark. After forcing the Hawks to punt again, Germantown undertook a six-play drive that ended with a touchdown by Lawhorn at the 3:56 mark of the first quarter. Germantown scored 28 more points in the second quarter. With Germantown leading by more than 35 points, the second half was played under a "running clock" and several starters were on the bench due to the lead. Greenfield got on the board with 2:15 left in the game as Tyler Dorfner finished a late drive with a 4-yard run into the end zone. Lawhorn completed 5 of 9 passes for 137 yards and one touchdown while allowing one interception. Davis said his team was hungry and ready to bounce back from its performance in a scrimmage the previous week. "I saw where our guys stepped up, a lot of guys started on varsity the first time," Davis said. "That can be a little shaky but they did a really nice job stepping in and getting after it." Aug. 23, Menomonee Falls 16, Oak Creek 10: Bryce McMurtry got Menomonee Falls on the board first with a 10-yard run at the 6:25 mark of the second quarter. Matt Hargreaves responded with a field goal at the 2:55 mark. Menomonee Falls started to break away in the third quarter, as Christian Almonte scored on a 3-yard run while Alec Knuese converted a 36-yard field goal. Oak Creek rallied at Derrick Stephan entered the end zone from 7 yards out with 1:40 remaining but the Knights couldn't get any closer. Aug. 22, Franklin 44, Hamilton 16: The Sabres broke the game open with three touchdowns in the third quarter. Hamilton's scores came on a 32-yard field goal by Brett Harvestine at the 9:43 mark of the second quarter, a 6-yard run by Andrew Dauer at the 2:56 mark of the second quarter and a 26-yard run into the end zone by Drew Patterson at the 1:29 mark of the third quarter.

Boys soccer: Falls wins first five games
Menomonee Falls was undefeated after its first five games of the season. The most recent win came in a 5-1 win over Wauwatosa West Aug. 28. Following a 4-1 season opening win over St. Anthony, Menomonee Falls posted wins over Racine Case (2-1) and Elkhorn (4-0) at the Racine Case tourney Aug. 21. Menomonee Falls then topped Wauwatosa East 4-3 Aug. 27. Hamilton had an 0-3 record following its first three games of the season. The Chargers lost to Brookfield Central 2-0 Aug. 27.
