Germantown School District changes health insurance carriers
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Germantown School Board approved a change in the district's health insurance carrier Aug. 26, choosing Humana to replace longtime provider WEA Trust. The change will occur Oct. 1. Under the Humana third option approved by the board, the individual deductible will be $1,000 within the preferred provider option (PPO ) in network and $1,500 outside of it. The family plan will be $2,000 for the PPO in network and $3,000 out of it. Under the Humana plan, the individual out of pocket maximum will be $2,250 while the family out of pocket maximum will be $4,500. At the start of discussion, board member Tom Barney explained that the district received bids from Humana and WEA Trust. The WEA renewal rates were 14 percent higher, which could have been reduced by 2 percent if the district went into the wellness program offered by WEA Trust. By comparison, Humana has what Barney called "an essentially identical plan" which has a 3.7 percent increase. The gap between those figures is $294,347 in cost avoidance for the district. "This is an excellent way for cost containment," board member Sarah Larson said in summarizing the

Rockfield Elementary named Title I high achieving school
Rockfield Elementary School in the Germantown School District was named a Wisconsin Title I High Achieving school last week. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Evers issued a news release Sept. 5 announcing that 167 schools were recognized for success in educating students from low income families. According to the statement from the Department of Public Instruction, “all awardwinning schools receive federal Title I funding to provide services to high numbers or high percentages of economically disadvantaged children. Schools received awards in three categories: High-Achieving, HighProgress, and Beating the Odds based on specific criteria.” Rockfield was named a high achieving school. To attain a designation for a high achieving school, a school must meet all annual objectives for achievement and graduation, have achievement gaps that are less than 3 percent between student groups or show evidence of reducing gaps and demonstrate a high achievement at the school level. "The staff and administration of these schools are committed to breaking the link between poverty and low academic achievement through rigorous programming and attention to student needs," Evers said in the statement. "The partnerships these schools create among teachers, parents, administrators, other school staff members, and the community provide an educational environment that supports children’s learning so our students graduate college and career ready." —Compiled by Thomas J. McKillen from information by the state Department of Public Instruction

Board to review waiver request from volleyball club
The Germantown School Board will consider a request from the G-Force Volleyball Club to use the gold gym at Kennedy Middle School on Sundays from December 2013 to December 2014. The item will be one of several items on the Sept. 9 board agenda. The meeting will be held in the district administrative office at N104 W13840 Donges Bay Road at 7 p.m. Under the current district policy the gold gym at the school is not allowed for rental use, but organizations are able to appeal policy guidelines to the School Board. Tim Janzen, chief executive officer and president of G-Force Volleyball Club, said the club "has treated this school as if was like our home. We have had no major issues while using the gyms and we get along very well with your outstanding custodian crew." Janzen noted that last season there were six club coaches who were school district employees. Among other items on the board agenda will be reports on the Healthcare Career Academy, Advanced Placement courses at the high school, French I class at the high school, current enrollment and information on the upcoming budget and annual meeting. —Compiled by Thomas J. support for a new carrier. "Obviously, there isn't savings built in but the fact that they're getting identical benefits and we're reaping the benefits of a better wellness program having the (employee assistance program), this was a nice way to bridge that. I think it's value added compared with where we're at today." Board President Robert Soderberg said that going from a 14 percent to a 3.7 percent increase is "great news." "I think that's a win-win for everyone," he said. Board member Brian Medved asked what guarantees the district has that Humana didn't come with a "lowball" bid only to increase rates later on. "How do we know that's not going to happen?" he asked. Greg Kamps of Gallagher Benefit Services, who has served as the district insurance consultant, explained that the figures are based on the district's claims experience. He said that Humana's discounts "are a little bit better on the their networks that your employees are going to be going to. That's going to help your experience a little bit." In addition, Kamps said Humana is more aggressive in case management and will work with employees more on larger claims to get the proper care at a reasonable cost. "Those things are going to come into play when they develop your rates for next year," he said. Kamps also noted the company's wellness program will benefit employees both in terms of health and reduced costs. Kamps said that Humana has secured approximately 10 districts from the WEA Trust in recent years, including Mukwonago and Menomonee Falls. In the case of Mukwonago, their rate increases were in the single digits this past year, he said. "They've been pretty successful about retaining their book of business with the schools," Kamps said. Medved asked about the number of providers in the Humana network and if employees would have to switch doctors to benefit from the changes. "You're not going to have to switch doctors. Very comparable," Kamps said. Representatives from Humana mentioned "add-ons" including a rewards and incentives based wellness program in which points are earned as people exercise and engage in healthy behaviors.

Fast start lifts Falls past West Bend East
Menomonee Falls offense and defense got off to a fast start on the way to a 42-7 win over West Bend East Aug. 30. Adam Vechart got the Indians on the board at the 10:40 mark with a 1-yard run that finished off the Indians opening drive. While East recovered a fumble on Menomonee Falls next drive, the defense held and forced a punt. The Indians then took advantage of their third possession of the game to start a 10 -play drive on their 28 yard line, which ended with a 4-yard run by Bryce McMurtry at the 2:22 mark of the first quarter. On the Suns first possession of the second quarter, Ty Weber stepped in front of a East pass and returned it 40 yards to give Menomonee Falls a 21-0 lead. East responded with an eight play drive that started at its 41-yard line and got as close as the Menomonee Falls 5 yard line. The drive was stopped by a Jason Precia interception in the end zone, with Precia returning the ball to the Indians 19 yard line. Menomonee Falls then responded with a four play drive that was finished by a 25yard run by Bryce McMurtry with 6 minutes left in the quarter. "Our defense made some big plays, they actually got on the field quite a bit in the first half," Menomonee Falls Coach John Baker said, noting how the defense was back on the field after the interception return. "Our defense did a great job all game." Baker added that his offense was better this week as the execution of plays was improved and put together several successful drives. In addition, the pass protection was good and Baker was able to rotate linemen throughout the game. "They just jelled tonight and played really well," he said. Menomonee Falls other scores came on a 10-yard run by McMurtry with 1:17 left in the second quarter and a 1-yard run by Dontrell Handy at the 3:26 mark of the third quarter. East's lone score came with 5:43 left in the game as Seth Schrank connected with Ian Loveland on a 19 yard pass play. Sussex Hamilton 49, Milwaukee Morse/Marshall Co-op 0: Hamilton opened the scoring as Ian Webb returned a pun 52 yards for a touchdown at the 9:44 mark. Drew Patterson scored on touchdown runs of 2, 3 and 50 yards, Travis Jarus scored on a 7-yard run while Dan Lunowa scored on a 1-yard run. Hamilton's other score came on a 38-yard pass play from Mike Barnes to Ryan Warzon. Greendale Martin Luther 14, Kettle Moraine Lutheran 13: The Chargers took a 13-8 lead at the 3:54 mark of the third quarter after Jared Henning and Brandon Shiley connected on an 11-yard pass play. However, a 2-point attempt after the touchdown failed. —By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

Girls volleyball: Falls second at Joust
Menomonee Falls advanced to the title game of the Thomas More/Homestead Joust Aug. 31 before losing to East Troy, 23-25, 25-17, 11-15. Menomonee Falls opened the tournament Aug. 30 with wins over Germantown (25-20, 27-25), Watertown (25-17, 25-20) and Waukesha West (25-15, 25-17) on Aug. 30. In pool play at the start of Aug. 31, Menomonee Falls posted wins over Muskego (14-25, 29-27, 15-11) and Pius XI (25-18, 25-15). Menomonee Falls then beat West Bend East in the semifinal 25-12, 2519. The second place at the Joust is an improvement on last year's fifth place finish. Menomonee Falls enters the season with a few new players playing key roles in the center and on the right side, blending with returning starters. "We'll only keep getting better. We missed a lot of serves today. If we don't miss a lot of serves, we've even in a better place," Menomonee Falls Coach J.C. Bruns said. Bruns then praised East Troy, a rising Division 2 program which knocked off several Division 1 programs to take the Joust title. "They played awesome and they deserve it," he said. Menomonee Falls started Greater Metro Conference play with a 25-10, 25-12, 25-16 win at Wauwatosa East Sept. 4. Germantown opened North Shore Conference play with a 25-16, 28-26, 2514 win over Whitefish Bay Sept. 3 The Warhawks lost the bronze title match at the Joust to Arrowhead, 25-20, 30-28. During the tournament Germantown lost to Menomonee Falls, Divine Savior Holy Angels and West Bend East while posting wins over Waukesha West, Pius XI and Watertown. Hamilton opened the Greater Metro Conference portion of the season with a 1225, 15-25, 20-25 loss to Brookfield Central Sept. 4.
