authority and the students.
I initially got to know the children as they walked to and from school, on the road in front of my house. It wasn’t long before I was visiting their homes, playing volleyball, and searching together for mangos. It was their inspiring personal stories that motivated me to reach out to try and raise the needed funds towards improving the learning

About the school: The San Apolinario Elementary School was built in 1978. The school is located in Tangub City, the smallest city in the Philippines situated on the southernmost Island of Mindanao. Mindanao is often in the news because of the ongoing armed conflict and peace talks between the Filipino government and the separatist movement led by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). The students who attend the school either come from

The Project: With your help we will be supporting the students by bringing needed improvements to the schools sanitation and hygiene facilities. We aim to address the hygiene issues in order limit the spread of bacteria and ensure for a healthy learning environment for the students. New toilets, a hand washing area and educational material on hygiene are critically needed. The overall aim of this development project is therefore to: a) Upgrade sanitation facilities b) Improve hygiene practices Our target is to raise 2,500 EURO in 70 days. This priority has been reached through close consultation with the principle and teachers. At a later stage we hope to be able to deliver other projects in the pipeline, such as improving the class rooms and the teaching equipment.

farming or fishing communities. Many of these students live in a makeshift village which is one of the most economically deprived areas in the city. Going to school therefore gives these children the opportunity to learn critical skills necessary in order to gain greater social mobility. The elementary school currently has only 6 class rooms. This means that on average any single class room will hold 43 students – though at times there can be more than 50 children in attendance. While the passion and dedication of the teachers is exceptional, the resources available are limited. You can imagine that teaching and learning English, math, geography, and Tagalog (the national language of the Philippines) is a challenge for both the teachers and the students. Transparency and Accountability: Acting in a transparent manner and being held to account is a priority to making this fund-raising project a success. To guarantee that donations are invested for the defined purpose and that they go directly to the benefit of the students, Nicole Zwaaneveld will manage the purchasing of raw materials and construction costs, which in turn will be donated to the Elementary School.
