Miata Holmes: Paralegal at Greenberg Traurig, LLP, in Los Angeles, CA
[By Judith Earley] The people with whom she works are what paralegal Miata Holmes enjoys most about her job. Holmes works in the Los Angeles, California, office of Greenberg Traurig, LLP. She found her position via MonsterTRAK.com, a job-posting site for college students and alumni. Of her coworkers, Holmes said, “They have a wealth of knowledge, and I am grateful to be able to learn from them. It is a pleasure working in the entertainment department.”
According to Holmes, technological advancement in the entertainment industry is, by far, one of the most important and challenging issues facing the legal community today. “With the ability to access music, television shows, and movies in more areas of media, it is a constant struggle to keep up. As everything is new, the standards have yet to be established,” said Holmes.
Fellow entertainment paralegal Suzie Weston has greatly influenced Holmes in her paralegal career. “She has been in the business for a long time, and she is still enthusiastic about her work. She is extremely knowledgeable, and I feel blessed that she trained me,” said Holmes.
Holmes said that she has no regrets about the choices she has made in her career. Her advice for students who are preparing to become paralegals is to be open to exploring different fields of law and broadening their expertise.
Although both of Holmes’s parents are American, she was born in Sierra Leone. “My

dad worked there for four years, and I was conceived during the second year abroad,” said Holmes. “Supposedly, my name means ‘woman born far away’ in Mende (one of the languages). One of the emotional highlights of Holmes’s career to date was the opportunity she had to be involved with Live 8. “The 0 concerts were timed to precede the G8 conference and brought attention to the world’s poorest nations, many of which are in Africa, and their need of aid and debt forgiveness. Just having a small role in an event of that magnitude was incredible,” explained Holmes.
