Phew – the flu season is finally over………….. We have given out many more vaccinations than we have ever done before – the start was slow but momentum picked up when the flu hit the headlines. There was no pandemic nor massive increase in flu so the whole demand came as a bit of a surprise. We coped well however if you are entitled to a vaccination and are in the cohort for 2011 PLEASE book early when the appointments are available. We should be starting vaccinations in OCTOBER 2011 and finishing well before Christmas so if you are in the cohort - (Heart Disease and / or diabetes and / or asthma and / or over 65 etc) PLEASE put a reminder to book an appointment in your diary. The PCT will be around for a while – gradually handing over to consortiums. Neston Surgery is a part of a consortium consisting of all 40 practices in Western Cheshire. There is some worry about GPs having a shed load of money to run the NHS and there will be financial ruin – This is not the case…. The consortium will have a board of very able clinicians who will have control of commissioning services for the patients. This will enable the people who know what services are needed to provide them for their patients. Will we feel the difference straight away? – in some areas maybe yes, in other areas it will take longer. I do not expect everything to change as there are some fantastic services provided already. Here in Neston we are well looked after but at times it may not feel that way – there are instances where treatment may seem lacking and these are the problems facing the consortium straight away. MONEY? The GP surgeries have for many years been controlled by budget restrictions, our drug budget for instance is well controlled without the need for rationing. It may surprise many to find out just how much the medicines cost the NHS, in our modest surgery the drug bill is around 1.4 million – and if you add in all the 40 surgeries in the consortium it is a frightening amount. We have a very good health service though at times it can be frustrating and appear to not be working for the individual. We are here to help so if you have a problem over our services or if you have any practical ideas on improving or adding services please let me know – in writing of course. There is also a suggestion box in the waiting room but please add your name – it is difficult to reply to anonymous suggestions. 10 24 Never, never, never give up. NEW ADDRESS United in song Two local schools, woodfall Primary and Neston High School are proving that friendship really is worth singing about. As a result of funding from the British Council for a Global Curriculum Project, the two schools have been working together with their partner schools in Cape Town (St James’ Primary and Bergvliet High School) to write an anthem celebrating their friendship. The work put in by students has been brought together by freelance composer Matt Baker (pictured) who has been teaching the students the anthem prior to them working with The Harlequin Project based at Chester University to record their debut CD. Teachers from both schools together with a party of 5 students from Neston High School travelled to Cape Town during the recent half term holiday and presented the anthem at the International Afritwin Project Conference where it was greeted with great enthusiasm by the assembled audience of Headteachers and senior staff from across the western Cape. 4 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.nestonlocal.com Neston Local April 2011 5 You can fnd us on facebook. NINETEEN members of South Wirral Slimming World Groups are losers – and they couldn’t be more proud. The members were struggling with their weight and their size was affecting every aspect of their daily lives. However, with the support of their Slimming world group in South wirral, not only are they an amazing 98 1/2 stones lighter between them, they have just been awarded their slimming club’s Greatest Loser 2011 title too. Each member has won the title for the session that they attend at the group. Marilyn Tait who lost 3st and is a target member of Little Neston group says: “It’s one thing to eat unhealthily and not do enough exercise, but it’s another thing altogether to be putting your health at risk in this way, its gambling with your life and putting yourself at risk of developing heart disease or having a stoke, or in my case, making my diabetes far worse - I didn’t want to put myself through that and I didn’t want to put my family through it either. I was slowly killing myself and I knew something had to change.” Slimming and swimming Marilyn’s weight was also putting a huge strain on her health as she had diabetes. People who are severely overweight, with a BMI above 30, are more likely to suffer from health problems like coronary heart disease, arthritis, diabetes and even cancer, and obesity is linked to a reduction in life expectancy of between seven and nine years. Together with the other winners from the South wirral groups, the members have lost an amazing 98 1/2 stones in total, and they feel like new women. These days Marilyn swims – a far cry from the days when just climbing stairs could leave them out of breath. Shopping’s not a problem anymore either after Marilyn dropped three dress sizes. Jayne, who runs the Neston Slimming world group, says: “The change we’ve seen in the girls is amazing, they are unrecognisable, inside and out, from the people who frst walked into our Slimming world groups. Not only do they look great, they’ve transformed their health, especially in Marilyn’s case, as her diabetes has improved so much that she’s been able to reduce her insulin dramatically, and the hospital are so pleased with her that they’ve asked her to talk to other diabetes patients about her success.” 8 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.nestonlocal.com Neston Local April 2011 9 *Half price membership until 11 June 2011 www.slimmingworld.com 0844 897 8000 t h e c lu b w ith the b ig h e a r t ! THERE were big celebrations last month for the offcial opening of Parkgate Pre-School’s new home. Parkgate Pre-School has been run for 16 years from a classroom within Parkgate Primary School but due to a higher intake the big school needed the use of their classroom back. The pre-school was left with the diffcult task of fnding a new base and it was decided to build it within the school grounds. Lots of fund raising has taken place over the last 18 months, with sponsored walks, sales, family fun days and curry nights to supplement grants from the local authority. School manager Alan Mayers, who hatched the plan, also volunteered his time to lay foundations, build and decorate the pre-school. Fortunate Fund raiser Cheryl Gardner said: “we have been extremely fortunate in that both pre-school and school parents, grandparents, uncles and friends have given their time and expertise to make the project a success. People who you simply said hello to each morning in the playground suddenly turned into Architects, Joiners, Electricians, Labourers, Alarm Engineers, Painters, Decorators and Landscape Gardeners.” work started on the foundation in July 2010 and the pre-school was able to use St Thomas’s Church as a temporary venue. Finally, after six months of hard work, the doors were opened at the new venue at the end of January. The offcial opening took place last month. Cheryl added: “The present government are very keen on the big society concept and this project certainly gave power to our community, encouraged people to take an active role whilst supporting a local Charity. As a result of which we have provided the Parkgate and Neston community with a pre-school which will serve many future generations.” Pre-school provides a lasting legacy The Mayor of Neston David Clark cuts the ribbon contemporary & traditional oak, teak & pine specialists 12 Mollington Grange I Parkgate Road I Mollington I Chester CH1 6NP (opposite the Mollington Banastre Hotel) t 01244 851188 e [email protected] visit our new website www.mollingtongrange.co.uk 44 colours and finishes - available to choose at our relaxed Mollington showroom or by ordering on-line I Dining furniture I Bedroom furniture I Lounge furniture I Bespoke furniture made to order I Furniture colour matching and re-colouring I Painted furniture I Lighting and accessories I Tub chairs and occasionals mollington 12/1/11 4:05 PM Page 3 10 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.nestonlocal.com Neston Local April 2011 11 History is written by the victors. contemporary & traditional oak, teak & pine specialists 12 Mollington Grange I Parkgate Road I Mollington I Chester CH1 6NP (opposite the Mollington Banastre Hotel) t 01244 851188 e [email protected] visit our new website www.mollingtongrange.co.uk 44 colours and finishes - available to choose at our relaxed Mollington showroom or by ordering on-line I Dining furniture I Bedroom furniture I Lounge furniture I Bespoke furniture made to order I Furniture colour matching and re-colouring I Painted furniture I Lighting and accessories I Tub chairs and occasionals mollington 12/1/11 4:05 PM Page 3 12 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.nestonlocal.com Neston Local April 2011 13 However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results. It does not seem too much use being anything else. Children at Oaklands Day Nursery, on Liverpool Road, Neston, took part in the Guinness world record attempt for the longest piece of bunting to celebrate fair trade. They each decorated their own piece of bunting, which was then sewn together onto one continuous line. They joined children from all across the area at the record attempt in Chester which saw the bunting stretched around the city walls. The bunting has now been sent down to London to take part in World Fair Trade Day on 8th May 2011, where the world record attempt will hopefully be accomplished! Woodfall Primary School has been awarded Fair Trade Status after working hard to raise the children’s awareness of the true meaning of Fair Trade and how as a school they can support it. The children have learnt about the benefts of supporting Fair Trade through lessons, workshops and special events. On Saturday 12th March the school also took part in the World’s Longest Bunting World Record attempt in Chester City Centre. Each pupil had designed their own fag on Fair Trade Cotton that was sewn together to make over 90 metres of bunting. Woodfall Achieves Fair Trade Award ! Woodfall Primary School is pleased to announce that they have been awarded the Fair Trade Status Award. We have been working hard to raise the children’s awareness of the true meaning of Fair Trade and how as a school we can support Fair Trade. The children have learnt about the benefits of supporting Fair Trade through lessons, workshops and special events. During Fair Trade Fortnight the children had the opportunity to purchase Fair Trade food and friends and family were invited to our Fair Trade tea and coffee afternoon. On Saturday 12th March we also took part in the World’s Longest Bunting World Record attempt in Chester City Centre. Each pupil had designed their own flag on Fair Trade Cotton that was sewn together to make over 90 metres of bunting. Our bunting was then joined with other schools’ to stretch around the city walls. Lots of Woodfall children, staff and parents joined us on the day to hold up the bunting as part of this event. There was no pandemic nor massive increase in flu so the whole demand came as a bit of a surprise. We coped well however if you are entitled to a vaccination and are in the cohort for 2011 PLEASE book early when the appointments are available. I’ve been happily using the same skin care products for years, but they don’t seem to be delivering the same results as they used to. Do you have any suggestions? A. Your skin is constantly changing and you need to adapt your skin care products to suit the needs of your skin at that particular time. Your skin can vary from month to month depending on your health and exposure to environmental changes and certainly from season to season. The skin care products needed during the autumn and winter months can vary enormously from those required during the spring and summer. More information on how you can adapt your skin skin care routine o cope with seasonal changes are to be found on the newsletter page at www. angelabartlett.co.uk. I think you have been lucky to have achieved results from using the same products for such a long time, but now spring is here I would advise you to visit your professional skin care therapist for a good skin analysis or Face Mapping and get an updated recommendation on the best products to use for your skin condition. Q. I’m getting married this month and want to develop a tan. What would you recommend? A. If you are a regular reader of my Question and Answer section you will know that I am completely opposed to tanning from natural sunlight or sunbeds! A tan will be gone a in a few weeks, but the damage will last a lifetime, so don’t risk it when there are so many great sunless tanning products out there to enjoy. The key to a perfect fake tan is in the preparation of your skin and to get my top tips for preparing your skin for sunless tanning visit the newsletter page at www. angelabartlett.co.uk. One of the quickest and easiest ways of achieving a perfect tan is to visit a professional for either a spray tan or a manual application. It is wise to have a trial session a few weeks before the wedding so you can be sure that you will be happy with the results and then book your ‘wedding tan’ approximately 24-48 hours prior to your Big Day. Ensure your treatment for the big day is with the same person as for your trial as variations in application can occur between therapists and this will give you confdence in the results. health & beauty with Angela Bartlett Neston Local April 2011 27 History will be kind to me for I intend to write it.
