Cohan Después de la aterradora presencia de Sandy, el último huracán que golpeó la costa este de los Estados Unidos dejando a su paso a miles de personas en muy mala situación en nuestros estados vecinos, y logró poner en jaque a la ciudad de New York, vivimos el terremoto político que significó la re-elección de Barack Obama el pasado 6 de noviembre. A primera hora del día siguiente recibí un mensaje de texto compartiendo la buena nueva y mi amigo mencionaba que: ahora sí van a aprobar la reforma migratoria, y eso me puso a pensar sobre esa posibilidad, y la verdad es que tengo mis dudas al respecto. Ya han pasado cuatro años y de todas las maneras posibles esa iniciativa ha sido entorpecida, y como se ha visto en los resultados de las elecciones, los adversarios del presidente continúan manteniendo el control de la casa de representantes, precisamente el lugar donde se ha trabado el proceso de reforma migratoria. Por otra parte es muy significativo que el voto hispano haya sido en un 70% para Obama, lo que podría insinuar que los hispanos confían que esta vez el presidente ponga en movimiento el cambio que ofreció hace 4 años atrás. Varios comentaristas en esas largas horas de espera por los resultados electorales mencionaban cómo el no apoyar el Dream Act por parte de Mitt Romney lo habría condenado ante el electorado hispano, y no les falta razón cuando vemos los números finales. Ahora, otra cosa es que el voto latino haya sido o no la clave para la victoria del ganador. A esto último habría que ponerle más lupa que las pocas horas que han pasado desde las votaciones. Llama también la atención la participación de los jóvenes entre 18 y 29 años que esta vez sumaron casi el 20% de los votos y en su inmensa mayoría apoyaron el proyecto de Obama, está claro que tienen confianza en tener un mejor futuro con este hombre En los días por venir se diseccionara al detalle todo el proceso que costó más de 3 billones de dólares, pero a mi entender, lo que sí queda claro es que los norteamericanos le han dado un voto de confianza a Obama y que esta vez los dos principales partidos podrían trabajar juntos para avanzar en algunas reformas. En cuanto a Delaware, la hegemonía demócrata se mantuvo y la comunidad hispana celebra el hecho de que, por primera vez en al historia cuatro hispanos, dos demócratas en la ciudad de Wilmington (Cabrera y Prado) aseguraron su silla en el consejo de la ciudad, y dos republicanos (Miro y López) ocuparán cargos en la Cámara de Representantes del estado. En hora buena para todos y a trabajar se ha dicho. Early the next day I received a text message sharing the good news and my friend mentioned that this time they will pass the immigration reform, which got me thinking about that possibility, and to tell you the truth, I have my doubts. It’s been four years and in every possible way this initiative has been hindered, and as seen in the results of the election, opponents of the President continue to maintain control of the House of Representatives, precisely where the immigration reform process has been locked. Moreover it is very significant that the Hispanic vote has been 70% for Obama, which could suggest that Hispanics trust that this time the president will set in motion the change offered 4 years ago. Several commentators in those long waiting hours for the election results mentioned how not supporting the Dream Act on Mitt Romney’s behalf would have condemned him before the Hispanic electorate, and they were right when we see the final numbers. Now, another thing is that the Latino vote was or not the key to the victory of the winner. Regarding the latter, we have to look into it with more detail than the few hours passed since the elections. Rivero-Rodriguez “Esperando” A medida que nuestra nación se enfrenta a elecciones presidenciales y ahora espera el resultado oficial de la victoria proyectada y la re-elección del presidente Obama, sólo puedo pensar en donde estaba hace una semana. Es difícil creer que hace sólo una semana se me permitió regresar a mi casa después del camino de destrucción dejado por el huracán Sandy. El domingo 28 de noviembre tuvimos una evacuación obligatoria debido a la ubicación del lugar donde vivo y la trayectoria proyectada donde Sandy tocaría tierra, y mi casa estaba justo en medio de todo. Yo vivo justo en la zona costera, en una pequeña casa sobre alambiques, a la que he apodado “la casita del árbol”. En una noche clara, desde la terraza del jardín de mi casa, puedo ver las luces parpadeantes de un faro situado en Nueva Jersey. Me siento verdaderamente bendecida de poder disfrutar de los amaneceres y puestas de sol más impresionantes, pero también sé que estoy muy expuesta a los elementos. Somos una comunidad muy pequeña de vecinos que nos ocupamos los unos de los otros y cuando recibimos la orden de evacuar, todos nos ayudamos mutuamente a prepararnos para lo desconocido. Nunca perdimos la electricidad, pero el viento y la lluvia eran feroces. Me sorprende cómo personas que no se conocen pueden unirse y apoyarse mutuamente en tiempos de incertidumbre. Al mediodía del martes 30, recibí la llamada diciéndome que podía volver a casa. Tuve sentimientos encontrados, y me sentí muy contenta de volver a casa, pero insegura de lo que podría encontrar cuando llegara. Me siento bendecida por haberme salvado. ¿Cómo ayudarás tú? ¿Qué estás esperando? “Awaiting” As our nation faces presidential elections and now awaits the official result of the projected win and re-election of President Obama; I can only think where I was a week ago. It is hard to believe that only a week ago I was allowed to return to my home after hurricane Sandy’s path of destruction. On Sunday November 28th we had a mandatory evacuation because of the location of where I live and the projected path where Sandy would hit and my home was right smack in the middle of it. I live right in the coastal area, on a small house that sits on stills, which I nicknamed “the tree house.” On a clear night, from my backyard’s deck, I can see the flickering lights of a lighthouse located in New Jersey. I am truly blessed to enjoy the most amazing sunrises and sunsets, but I also know that I am very exposed to the elements. We are a very small community of homes that looks after each other and when the word was to evacuate, we all helped each other to prepare for the unknown. I have to be honest, but I was emotionally numbed and just went through the motions of getting ready for the hurricane and not truly thinking of what could happen or what could be for me and my family. With much inner strength, faith and hope, I packed my car up with those materials things that are important to me and which I know that they can’t be replaced. My two dogs and my three cats, filled the car up to the top. As I drove off, a tear rolled down my face, just thinking of the unknown and the reality of what it could be was finding its way in my mind and heart. For two nights, I stayed in a pet-friendly hotel with many other families that had mandatory evacuation just as I did. We never lost electricity, but the wind and rain were fierce! I am amazed as to how people that are complete strangers; can come together and give each other support in times of uncertainty. At mid-day on Tuesday 30th, I received the call that I could return home. I had mixed emotions, and feeling very happy to go home, but feeling unsure of what I could find when I arrived home. It was like all my prayers were heard and as I drove closer, my tree house was there and no damages were experienced. We dodged this one, but New Jersey and New York were under the wrath of Sandy. The images of the damages that these two states have endured leave me speechless, but my heart goes to all those families that have endured the loss of lives and the loss of their homes and all their material belongings. It is time to lend a hand and I have been helping making care-packages. For many, the awaiting commences in the rebuilding of their lives. I am blessed for being spared. How will you be helping? [ cartas al editor / letters to the editor ] DO IMMIGRANTS STEAL JOBS?” By Raoul Lowery Contreras Predating myriad anti-immigrant and anti-Mexican groups fostered and nurtured by and through the Internet, there were groups founded by the USA’s most dangerous bigoted Mexican-hater of all time, Dr. John Tanton of Michigan, former Sierra Club big wig and former President of ultra-left Zero Population groups active in ending immigration to the U.S. based on a foundation of skin color and religion. Some of the groups he founded – with money from the Pioneer Fund, a totally discredited pseudo-intellectual/scientific racist group – are the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), U.S. English (an English-only group), NumbersUSA (Roy Beck), the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) and the Social Contract Press, a quarterly “scholarly” publication. These groups and the Press are characterized by the Southern Poverty Law Center: “As long ago as 1988, a set of his (Tanton) internal memoranda to the staffs of two groups he founded — FAIR and U.S. English — were leaked and showed Tanton warning of a coming “Latin onslaught,” questioning whether Latinos were as “educable” as others, and worrying that Latinos were outbreeding (sic) whites. A decade later, he told a reporter that whites would soon develop a racial consciousness, and the result would be “the war of all against all.” He (Tanton) hired and worked alongside Wayne Lutton, who has held leadership positions in four white supremacist hate groups. He published and endorsed a racist book on immigration, and he published numerous white supremacists. Tanton compared immigrants to bacteria that will continue growing until the population crashes, and sneered at immigrants’ “defecating and creating garbage and looking for jobs.” CIS and NumbersUSA have become relatively well-known Tanton groups that strive for “respectability” and do so with “research” and “reports” that purport to be scholarly and scientific but in reality are pure CRAP! For example, of late CIS (and Ed Rubenstein of Vdare) has issued a number of memos claiming that immigrants (legal and illegal) have taken all new jobs created in the modest new Obama job market creeping slowly across the country in the era of higher-than-8-percent unemployment. Thus, they say, Americans are being shoved aside by immigrants who are taking/stealing those jobs from American citizens. When experts on the labor market suggest that such is not the case, the CIS memo writers like Executive Director Mark Krikorian (a former head staffer at FAIR) react with bile and assault anyone that contradicts their shoddy and unsupported “studies” and “memos.” An emotionally blinded Krikorian: “Tell that to the 23 million Americans who are unemployed, forced to settle for part-time work, or gave up looking for work altogether.” Wow! Superficially, that sounds like a total indictment of immigrants getting jobs all together. In other words every time an immigrant gets a job, an American is either thrown out of work or must remain unemployed or underemployed because the immigrant gets a job. That is not true for several reasons. First, there is labor mobility. Immigrants tend to go to population centers where there are always jobs. And, because they travel light, they can move quickly because they are generally not tied down with mortgages, long-standing relationships and all the things that keep citizens emotionally/economically tied down. Secondly, immigrants will do any job. They tend not to be prejudiced towards job categories many Americans used to do. Has anyone heard of Japanese gardeners lately? Their children have become doctors, dentists and scientists. Gardeners now almost all speak Spanish. Here’s how points one and two merge. In Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath and its flood devastation in and around New Orleans and Mississippi, billions of government and insurance dollars flooded the devastated area. There were few New Orleans residents that wanted to clean up, to rebuild, nor did all the unemployed Rust Belt Americans drop everything and rush to New Orleans. Who did? Mexicans, legal and illegal, flooded into New Orleans and Mississippi to clean up and rebuild. The following year I met an FBI Special Agent from New Orleans at a conference. I asked about his post-Katrina experience. His house was destroyed by the flood. Working with architects and he quickly prepared plans for a new residence, got them approved by the various government agencies involved, then asked for construction bids. He dealt with bids for weeks; gave up the effort, took time off from the FBI, became his own General Contractor and hired Mexicans that were experienced carpenters, builders and construction workers and built his house and had it pass inspection within six weeks. When I asked him if he, a federal-badge carrying high-ranking federal officer checked the workers for legal ability to be in and legally work in the United States, he laughed and said Hell No. “I wanted a house, not a year-long project.” Mobility and a deep-seated desire to work; does that not define immigrants? Just under half will be able to be adopted by relatives or their foster families, leaving 50 more on any given day looking for permanent families to provide them with the love, support and nurturing they need. That’s why the Delaware Children’s Department is partnering with public and private adoption agencies, the Family Court, the Child Placement Review Board, community partners and adoptive families to celebrate National Adoption Month. “All children deserve to grow up in a loving family,” said Governor Jack Markell. “As we enter the holiday season, I can think of no better gift to give these children, than the gift of a permanent home.” During the month of November, the Delaware Children’s Department will feature profiles of several children who are legally ready for adoption placement. The event showcased international cuisine prepared by the Delaware Tech Culinary Arts and Food Service Management Departments. With over 100 participants, the event raised more than $5,000 for study abroad scholarships for those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to broaden their educational horizons. In an effort to help stock the food bank’s shelves and ensure that hungry Delawareans have access to healthy foods, the Food Bank of Delaware launched its second annual DelawareCAN competition in mid-September. The competition provided a creative way to collect much needed food and create a spirited competition in Delaware’s business community. Companies held food drives and competed to create sculptures out of the food items collected. In total, the Food Bank of Delaware received more than 30,000 pounds through the DelawareCAN competition. The following Delaware businesses were declared winners by the Food Bank of Delaware’s panel of five judges. Como experiencia inolvidable recuerda al menos dos: la llegada de Obama a la Presidencia y la reforma de salud que la llevó a aprender con mucha minuciosidad de cada detalle de la nueva ley. “Fue un momento fantástico en mi vida”, menciona. Lo particular de su historia es como la casualidad la llevó a formar una empresa que haciendo uso de las tecnologías actualmente disponibles, ha ido creciendo poco a poco, como quien no quiere la cosa. Se dedican a producir accesorios para mujer, “la cosa empezó cuando una amiga vio algunas fotos mías en Facebook y me preguntó que dónde había comprado una pulsera que llevaba en una foto y le respondí: es que la hice yo. Mi amiga me dijo, pues chica debes dedicarte a hacerlas en serio” y así empezó la empresa en la que trabaja con su madre, ella en Delaware y su madre Victoria en Madrid: Sira y Mara. Lo que empezó como un entretenimiento pasó a ser un negocio en serio, “nos esmeramos en buscar buenos materiales a precios accesibles de tal manera de que nuestros productos puedan estar al alcance de cualquiera”. Su estrategia ha sido usar el internet, los blog de modas en ambos lados del Atlántico, “a muchos ni los conocemos personalmente, pero les ha gustado lo que producimos y hemos tenido una buena respuesta, nos han hecho buena publicidad”, agrega con una sonrisa. Born in Spain, Madrid to be more precise, she has 13 years in Delaware where she has been working in the office of a prominent state politician, since 2008. This allowed her to acquire extensive experience in local and national politics, “I liked his way of thinking and doing things for the people of this state, I identified with his project and I learned a lot from him.” She remembers two unforgettable experiences: the arrival of Obama to the presidency and health reform that led her to learn very meticulously about every detail of the new law. “It was a fantastic moment in my life,” she mentions. The particularity of her history is how chance led her to form a company that using currently available technology has been growing slowly, without intentional meaning to do so. Engaged in producing accessories for women, “things started when a friend saw some pictures of me on Facebook and asked where I had bought a bracelet I was wearing in a photo and I replied that I did it. Sieving, M.D., Ph.D., director of the NEI. “If you have diabetes, be sure to have a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year. Diabetic eye disease often has no early warning signs, but can be detected early and treated before vision loss occurs. Don’t wait until you notice an eye problem to have an exam because vision that is lost often cannot be restored.” While all people with diabetes can develop diabetic eye disease, Hispanics/Latinos, African Americans, and American Indians/ Alaska Natives with diabetes are at higher risk of losing vision or going blind from it. All people with diabetes should have a dilated eye exam at least once a year to detect vision problems early. “In fact, with early detection, timely laser surgery, and appropriate follow-up care, people with advanced diabetic retinopathy can reduce their risk of blindness by 90 percent,” adds Suber Huang, M.D., M.B.A., chair of the Diabetic Eye Disease Subcommittee for the NEI’s National Eye Health Education Program. Research has shown that when people with diabetes maintain good control of blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol they can slow the development and progression of diabetic eye disease. In addition to having annual comprehensive dilated eye exams, people with diabetes should do the following to keep their health on TRACK: • Take your medications. • Reach and maintain a healthy weight. • Add physical activity to your daily routine. • Control your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol. • Kick the smoking habit. We have to accept that not everyone is going to like us or get along with us. Inevitably, you might have a different opinion than someone else. This is when your skills to deal with conflict come into play. You might be in a store and the cashier may be rude while they ring up your sale. We’ve all had that happen at least once, right? The first reaction might be to slam the money on the counter or to snap back at them. In that instant we have taken their problems as our own and created a stressful situation that can change the tone of the rest of our day. However, this only happens if we allow it. These five tips, suggested by author Hazel Palache, which work for coworkers, family members, friends, and even strangers. You never know when the proper response to a conflict could save you or someone else from having lots of stress. 1. Decide in advance how you intend to deal with any kind of conflict or disagreement that comes up. Sometimes we are quick to respond when someone says something we don’t like or don’t agree with. If you’ve given this some thought in advance and have been mastering your thinking you will know you don’t have to get defensive. First take a deep breath before responding. In that few seconds think about the words that were said so you can answer calmly without getting angry or defensive. 2. In many cases, the conflict that comes up is not the first of its kind. Harsh or offensive words might be a recurring theme in the relationship. Decide if this connection is worth holding on to or if it’s time to let go of the relationship. 3. You don’t have to respond right then. You can always say “I need to think about that, let me give you the answer later.” Give yourself time to talk over the situation with a trusted friend. Maybe you took what was said the wrong way. Sometimes, a third party can see something that you missed in the heat of your anger. Be big enough to apologize where necessary. If the consensus is that you were wronged then bring the matter to the attention of the other person with a level head and non-attacking kind of words. 4. Just because something is true doesn’t mean it has to be said. Telling someone that they are wearing a dress that is too small for them is not a positive way to help them lose weight. Understand how it could be offensive to them and apologize. Better yet, stop and think before you respond in situations such as these. Put yourself in the other person’s shoes. Part of resolving conflicts is realizing your role in it and how you can if you wish have the power not to get sucked in to something that could turn into chaos. 5. One of the best things I learned over the years if there’s a disagreement is to say “I don’t think I agree with you but you could of course be right!” Generally this will stop the conflict from going any further. Enforcement Campaign Begins November 7th The Delaware Office of Highway Safety has teamed up with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and 42 law enforcement agencies across the State to eliminate handheld cell phone use and texting by motorists traveling on Delaware’s roadways. Beginning November 7 through November 20, Delaware law enforcement will be out in force to make sure drivers keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel. “Reducing distracted driving improves safety for everyone who shares the road. Just as we keep our focus as a state on creating more jobs, we want drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and their focus on the road,” Governor Markell said. Distracted driving is any non-driving activity a person engages in behind the wheel that has the potential to distract him or her from the primary task of driving. Nationally in 2010, 3,092 people were killed, and an estimated 416,000 others were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver. “Talking or texting on a cell phone while driving is one of the most dangerous actions you can take on our roadways. Last year, 147 crashes were due to distracted driving. Our new dedicated enforcement campaign, “Phone in One Hand. Ticket in the Other.” will offer a tough lesson to any driver caught paying attention to their phones instead of the road,” said Lewis D. Schiliro, Secretary of Safety and Homeland Security. Law enforcement officers will show zero-tolerance for distracted driving. If they see you talking on your cell phone or texting while driving, they will give you a ticket. Because too many drivers still don’t get the message that using a cell phone while driving can be dangerous and deadly, this initial distracted driving crackdown marks the first of several enforcement waves taking place over the next year. Sending or receiving a text message takes a driver’s eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds -- the equivalent of a driver driving blind for the length of an entire football field at 55-mph. In a recent study, 40 percent of all American teens say they have been in a car when the driver used a cell phone in a way that put people in danger. “These figures may seem like just statistics, but we know that even one life lost or one victim severely injured, is one too many,” said Colonel Robert M. Coupe, Delaware State Police. “More often than we would like, we bring the tragic news to families about the serious injury or death of a loved one that may have been prevented had someone not been driving distracted.” That’s why Delaware drivers should know that law enforcement is stepping-up enforcement to save lives on Delaware roadways this November. To commemorate the Museum’s past annual exhibitions of painting and crafts—combined to form the Biennial in 1989—a juried Centennial will be on view from October 2012 through January 2013. The exhibition will feature a variety of media—drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, video, and installation—and include artists living either within the State of Delaware or within 100 miles of the Museum. Guest-juried by John B.
