Porn industry involves the production and distribution of sexually explicit and offensive materials that are used to entertain adults. The porn trade is carried out through a diverse range of media including literature, photos, audio, animation and video games. However, the most popular components of the trade are adult motion pictures and Internet porn. History of Porn Trade
The depiction of explicit acts is as old as the civilization itself. However, the modern concept of pornography can be traced back to the Victorian era. Interestingly, the Victorian era was known for repression of human sentiments. In addition, the Victorians were the first to compose laws that restricted the viewing of sexually offensive images and objects. The first law that criminalized pornography was incorporated by the United Kingdom Parliament in 1857 under the Obscene Publications Act. The legal status of the modern porn industry varies from country to country. Most countries permit some degree of adult entertainment.
Adult Entertainment Industry: Demand and Supply Drivers
The demand and supply levels in the porn industry are affected by various social and religious factors. Some Islamic countries have very stringent laws against the distribution of explicit content in any form. Porn is considered a taboo here. The adult entertainment industry is also affected by political and economic factors. The US porn industry, for example, was affected by the 2008-09 global recession, requiring a $5 billion bailout from the government for recovery. The major demand driver of the porn industry is the accessibility to the Internet. Major supply drivers include government regulation, development of technological filters, and the cost of creation and distribution of porn.

Frenesi Films (Brazil) and Erostream (Netherlands). Some of the major porn producing nations are Spain, Japan, Russia and Germany. According to toptenreviews.com, the countries with the largest revenue from the porn industry (in 2006) include China ($27.40 billion), South Korea ($25.73 billion), Japan ($19.98 billion) and the US ($13.33 billion). The porn industry is a major component of the world economy, generating large scale revenue and employment. According to toptenreviews.com, over $3,000 is spent every second across the world on pornography. However, it is difficult to estimate the accurate statistics for the entire industry as a large part of the industry operates underground.
