Date: June 7, 2014 Course/Instructor: Visual Media by Julie Peterson (Sec. 02) Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator Objectives: Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator pre-fabricated fares, symbols, etc.. No photos or live-tracing. Process: For the frst logo I used the shape tool and created a circle. Then using another circle I placed the second one on top of the frst and then deleted it in order to create the frst crescent shape. I then copied and pasted that same crescent shape twice more on top of the original. I then scaled them to different sizes and rotated them. Finally, I ordered them by placing them behind the frst one which creates the look of it being one shape. I then added some shadow and glare effects and then simply placed the text inside of the logo. For the second logo I simply used the pen tool to make a water drop shape and then flled it with a gradient. The fnal logo I made the text into shapes and stretched two of the letters and that was it. Iq Energy IQ Energy IQ Energy Event ad Description: This is an event ad made purely in Microsoft Word. The details of the event were created by myself and I searched for and scanned the photo that is featured in the ad. Date: May 17, 2014 Course/Instructor: Visual Media by Julie Peterson (Sec. 02) Program(s)/Tools: Microsoft Word, Epson Scanner, PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter) Objectives: Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop and choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience. Process: I decided it would be easiest to frst fnd the photo that I would like to use and then proceed to come up with an idea for the ad. I found this photo in National Geographic, scanned it, and resized it appropriately. I then created three boxes in Microsoft Word, flled them with color, and then added text boxes. I like the simplicity that was found in the ad. I looked at it for awhile deciding what more can be done but I decided it was best to keep it simple to not destroy or trap the white space. I also kept the colors the way they are to better represent something like an elementary school. The date, time and location are all made up. May 17 th | 10:00 am – 5:00 pm | Porter Park Montage Description: A funny montage made by the blending of two or more images, and the use of typography. Date: May 31, 2014 Course/Instructor: Visual Media by Julie Peterson (Sec. 02) Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop Objectives: Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks and unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant message. Process: 1. I cropped the background image to 8.5×11. 2. I selected the Cheshire Cat and moved him to the background image, then I added a mask. 3. With black paint and a 100% opacity, soft-edged brush, I painted away the hard image edges. 4. With a larger black brush at 30% opacity and 30% fow, I blended the image into the background, so it looks like he is melting into the scene. 5. I added some type with an “Alice in Wonderland” feel to the part of the lake that was the darkest for it to pop. 6. I then created another layer of the background and adjusted the levels to make the moon a bit less bright Flier Description: Black and white promotional fier for a graduate leadership conference by Vouant Communications. Date: May 10, 2014 Course/Instructor: Visual Media by Julie Peterson (Sec. 02) Program(s)/Tools: Adobe InDesign Objectives: Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic fier layout and apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Process: I frst created a series of sketches to determine my initial layout and see the overall design. Using these sketches I used Adobe InDesign to create this black and white fier. I emphasized the word “graduate” in the title for contrast and to make the message more clear. I added the photo into a unique shape to add some nice visual fow and to direct the reader towards the body text, which I kept small to avoid being distracting the message. I also aligned the the top of the start of the body copy to the top of the image for proper alignment and the end of “Leadership Conference” to the righthand side of “Graduate.” I also made sure to leave plenty of white space to avoid crowding the fier. I was provided the image, logo and body copy for this fier. Description: A two sided (duplex) folding brochure. Date: July 12, 2014 Course/Instructor: Visual Media by Julie Peterson (Sec. 02) Program(s)/Tools: Adobe InDesign, Illustrator & Photoshop Objectives: Set up and align a two-sided, folded document, and create an original logo and incorporating it into the document. Process: I frst decided that I wanted to make a brochure for a travel company so I frst had to make a logo for it in Adobe Illustrator. I made a perfect circle and then copied and pasted that circle a few more times adjacent to the original one. I then used the direct select tool and deleted portions of the circles to create certain letters, this leaving us with GoGoNow Travel. I then imported that logo into my Adobe InDesign brochure. I made it with certain boarders so I knew that I would be able to trim them and now lose anything of value. I then trimmed certain images with Photoshop and then placed them in the brochure with a Textwrap so that the body copy would fow around them. I then placed all of the images and body copy in together. Brochure Photodesign Description: Demonstrate good photography and image editing skills. Incorporating color into a poster layout with original photo. Date: May 24, 2014 Course/Instructor: Visual Media by Julie Peterson (Sec. 02) Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop Objectives: Learn basic photography skills and adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non- destructive editing.) Process: I frst tried to think of what color scheme I wanted to use for this project. I thought that I could possibly use a photo from my activity but I soon decided that I could do better. Between classes and while on campus I would continually have my eyes open to see what settings I could use. Then, before class I was enjoy the nice day outside and I saw a nice patch of green grass with a red fre hydrant so I immediately thought of a simple complementary color scheme. I took the photo with a Canon Rebel T3i and then uploaded it to Photoshop CS. I then used the clone stamp tool to get rid of some patches in the grass that were not very colorful and used the levels tool, vibrancy tool, and color selection tool to enhance the colors. I was then a bit stumped because I didn’t know how to actually use the photo and so I decided to just look up a quote online. This quote was the frst one that came up when I looked up things about fre hydrants and so I plugged that one in. Business card Description: Matching letterhead and business card designed using a personally created logo. Date: June 14, 2014 Course/Instructor: Visual Media by Julie Peterson (Sec. 02) Program(s)/Tools: Adobe InDesign & Illustrator Objectives: Use the logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Process: I created the logo using the star shape tool in Adobe Illustrator. I also used the pathfnder tool to cut and combine these simple shapes. Once the logo was created, I opened a new two page InDesign document and placed my logo .AI fle into this document. On my frst page I used the rectangle tool to create the front and back outline of my business card. I then copied/pasted the logo and contact information onto this page. I kept the logo and contact information about the same size as the information on the letterhead. I made sure that no important information came any closer than 1/8” from the edges. Letterhead Description: Matching letterhead and business card designed using a personally created logo. I decided to make my second page a letterhead. I positioned and placed the logo in the top right corner of my letterhead. I made sure to keep it at least .5” away from the edges. I then typed my contact information into a text box and positioned it on the right hand side of the letterhead. I made my name 12pt font to contrast with the 8pt contact information. I also added a large black and white version of the star logo as a watermark. I kept the opacity to about 10%. Web page Description: A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo. Date: June 28, 2014 Course/Instructor: Visual Media by Julie Peterson (Sec. 02) Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop and Notepad++ Objectives: Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. Acquire a working knowledge of CSS and identify hex colors for web design. Process: I created this web page using only TextWrangler. I had never seen or written any HTML/CSS. It was interesting to see how you could make a web page by only using a simple text editor. It was also interesting to use the http://www.W3.org HTML validator. It was useful to have something check to see if I had any problems with my code. After I marked up all my content and inserted my image, I attached a pre- made CSS document to my HTML. I then used the colors from my logo as the colors for my web page. At the time I did not have access to Photoshop so I pasted the image into Microsoft Pain and got the RGB color and then went and did a Google Search for a RGB to Hex color converter and that is how I got the Hex color. I also changed my fonts to Times New Roman and Helvetica. I declared some backup fonts just in case the viewer’s browser didn’t have these fonts. I also used padding around the logo and text so that they would not be too close to the edge of the web page. This was one of the most challenging parts of working with CSS.
