Subject FC – 9774 By John Kozel Jong Ho Kim sits alone in a windowless room in a large building on a military base, presumably in Virginia. The South Korean graduate student looks at the door and the four grey walls. He was surprised the first time in the room that it lacked a one-way mirror. Four grey walls, one door, two light fixtures, smooth ceiling, and smooth walls. He had never found the cameras or microphones, but know some were present. The three chairs on the other side of the wooden table are empty. How many will come this time? Will anyone come? It’s been thirteen, no fourteen, times in this room. What else can he say? Jong Ho Kim opens the folder on the otherwise empty table with his shackled hands. One of his responsibilities as a grad student had been to document potential cases of past life memories of the reincarnation type for the university. It had been one of those interviews that lead to his current situation. He scans the Personality Studies report he completed five months ago. “Initial interview concerning subject FC-9774. Jong Ho Kim interviewer. The female subject is age three years and two months, alias “Anne”. Father, MC-9775, is a 26 year old Caucasian, alias “Robert”. Robert served in Afghanistan between 2001 and 2003. Robert is currently on medical discharge, leg amputee, looking for work. His awards include the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. Mother, FC-9776, is a 24 year old Caucasian, alias “Mary”. Mary is an elementary school teacher. She has never traveled outside of the United States. Due to the highly sensitive nature of case the university has classified identification information. “The preliminary application was completed prior to this interview as per protocol. The first incident occurred when Anne was two and a half years old. Robert, Mary, and Anne were driving past a cemetery when Anne asked “Daddy, remember when you buried me?” Robert’s reply was “Baby, daddy never buried you.” “Yes you did, when I was big. You found me after the bad men killed me. You know in the cave.” “What cave, baby?” “You know, when you carried a gun in the other place. It had mountains, a big river, a dam, and lots and lots of caves.” At this point Robert pulled over to the side of the road and turned to his little girl, “Baby, I don’t understand.” “That’s when I picked you and followed you home to mommy. I like this place better. I love you, daddy.” Anne then switch back to a cute little toddler talking about her dollies. “Neither parent believed in reincarnation or psychic abilities at the time. Separate interviews were conducted according to standard university practice. This interview is approximately eight months after to first memory. “Robert is confused and worried about his little girl. His concerns appear to arise from a deep desire to protect his family rather than any systemic psychological issue, although he may be slightly paranoid due to the delicate nature of his daughter’s statements. His primary concern is that these memories might permanently scar his daughter. I assured him that in the vast majority of the thousands of documented childhood cases the subject completely forgets the past life by the age of seven or eight. Anna’s lack of anxiety retelling of the memory is typical. “Robert’s personal history includes psychological issues related to post traumatic stress disorder and mental trauma from his injury. He received inpatient psychologist care during the rehabilitation period. He is currently unemployed with disability payments. The family is relatively financially secure at this time. A decline in the financial security of the family may lead to depression, but no current psychological issues are observed at this time. He appears deeply committed with his marriage and family. “Mary states that she was initially very confused and admits to be slightly jealous that her daughter seemed to know more about her husband’s military service than she did. The recalled memory had raised some internal struggle with her strong Southern Baptist faith. She shared the general details of the case without providing specific information to a fellow female teacher. The friend, subject FC-9806, is not related to either parent. Subject FC-9806 has been contacted for an interview. “At that time the friend recommended several books on the subject which Mary read. She began to understand the widespread and common nature of reincarnation type memories in children. Mary appears to have accepted her daughter’s statements, although she has not shared anything with her family. No family member is available to substantiate Anna’s statements. Mary seems to be interested in documenting and understanding her daughter’s past life to better understand her husband. Mary reports that Robert has never shared much about his service and never provided any specific information. Mary’s strong insistence that Robert register Anne’s account with the university is the primary reason that we have the memory documented. “Mary describes Robert as a very private man with a strong since of honor. She is extremely proud of her husband who she believes would give his life for country and family. She is deeply committed with her marriage and family. Mary appears to be completely free of delusional behavior and other mental illness. “Anne is a sweet shy little girl with blond hair and blue eyes clinging to her daddy during the initial interview. No direct questions or physical examination is conducted at this time. Mary indicates that Anne has two unusual birth marks on her front and back that could correspond to the past live event. Unfortunately, no medical report was filed by the Army in the case. Although Anne remains quite she does not show overt anxiety at this time. “Mary started documenting Anne’s statements in the four months. As is typical, the statements have been consistent over time. “There are currently twelve documented statements from Anne about her past personality (PP). 1) PP was a teen age male age thirteen with dark hair and browns eyes. 2) PP lived and died in Afghanistan, Tora Bora region. 3) PP’s previous father had died helping the men that eventually killed PP. 4) PP was the oldest son with two younger sisters. 5) PP’s mother was short and rounder than Mary. 6) PP helped bury a bad man in a cave. 7) PP was taken to a different cave close to his village and killed with two shots to the back. 8) PP was found post mortem by Robert. 9) Robert brushed PP’s hair aside before caring PP’s body out of the cave. 10) Robert transported PP to his village with the help of others. 11) Robert delivered PP’s body to PP’s mother. 12) Sometime later Robert was walking down a mountain at night when he stepped on a bomb in the ground. “Robert can confirm 1, 2, 5, 8, 10, 11, and 12. Robert also presumes that 4 is also correct. Robert does not remember 9, but it is possible. Robert has no information on the other statements. Robert would offer no additional information of his service in the region at this time. “I gave the standard information packet and instructions to the parents. I inform the couple that I would like to examine Anna’s birthmarks at our next session and hopefully will be able to ask some questions of the child. I remind Mary to avoid leading questions. I reassure Robert that Anna is a perfectly normal and precious little girl. “End of preliminary interview for FC-9774. Recommend two week follow-up to collect additional statement and hopefully obtain photographs of Anna birth marks.” Jong Ho Kim looks down that his signature and date of the first report. He takes a deep breath, another sigh, and turns to the second report mechanically. “Subject FC-9774 – second interview.” Jong Ho Kim slams the report shut, he knows what it says. Anna is very comfortable and talkative during the meeting. Anna is the reincarnation of a thirteen year old boy. The boy’s dad had died helping a group of fighters, almost certainly al Qaida. The boy was forced to take his father’s place at the risk of death to his mother and two younger sisters. The boy’s responsibilities were to serve as a guide and lookout for the group. The boy had helped bury an important figure, possibly Osama bin Laden. The boy had then taken to another cave, shot twice, and died. Anna has two birthmarks that could represent the boy’s wounds. Anna’s dad had found the boy’s body and with some tenderness helped deliver the body to the mother. Anna was able to identify aerial photographs of the Tora Bora region from among photographs of various regions around the world. Anna was able to identify the approximate location of the burial site of the dead man. Robert had been very reluctant to confirm any statements made by his daughter. Without his help she looked through the photos and confidently located the site. Robert was visibly shaken at this point. He had insisted the Army review the case and declassify the facts prior to publication. Damn. It had been that request. That request, not the memories, not the facts of the case that had put him in this room. Damn. That stupid request was the source of his problems. Damn, Damn, Damn. The information is extraordinary, it should be published. Now it is a national security secret. Jong Ho Kim mumbles, “I should have just published that damn case” as he slams his fists on the table. The sound of rattling chains lingers before the room with one door, one table, three empty chairs, and two light fix fixtures becomes silent again. During the next five minutes he considers the stories that his parents had told him of the North Korea integration practices. He notes the similarities with his recent experience. “Steve” walks casually in the room. “It is a good thing that you did not publish this bullshit. You cannot imagine how much worse it would have been if you had disclosed national security information related to this country’s war on terror.” “What do you want? I have told you everything.” “No you haven’t. Tell me why you helped make up this story.” “I did not make up anything. Everything in my reports and everything that I have told you is the truth.” “The truth? The truth is that this nation is at war with terrorists. The truth is that this country was attacked. The truth is that we will do anything to protect ourselves and to punish those terrorists. The truth is that if you aid terrorists then this government will treat you as a terrorist.” “No you don’t understand. There are tens of thousands of documented cases by hundreds of researchers. This is a clear case of a reincarnation memory. You need to believe that.” “I believe in this county, the most advanced country in history, not some black magic superstitious backwater nation. Unfortunately this great country allows crackpots and fruitcakes to publish just about anything, so the documented evidence means little to me. You want me to believe that a three year old blond hair blue eye girl from Virginia is essentially an enemy combatant and national security risk?” “That was her past live personality.” Steve stands over the table and leans close, “Do you have undisputable scientific proof that this little girl is the reincarnation of an enemy combatant?” “Years of research strongly support.” Cutting him off Steve asks again, “Do you have undisputable scientific proof that this little girl is an enemy combatant?” “No. And she is not an enemy combatant. She is a perfectly normal innocent little girl.” “We have only two options here, either she is an enemy combatant or her father is a traitor. We have ways of finding the truth. Now, tell my why you helped make up this story.” “I did nothing of the sort. Her parents have told the truth and her father is an honorable man.” “Her father confessed and we have the body of Osama bin Laden. This is a great success for the county. It seems you have just been a pawn. Your visa has been revoked. You are scheduled for deportation at 1900 hours. You are warned that things will go very badly for you and your family if you ever discuss this case. Good day.” Steve turns to go. Jong Ho Kim stands up as far as the chains allow. “Wait. What confession? You don’t understand.” Two marines silently walked into the room, unchain Jong Ho Kim, and escort him back to his cell. “You are to be transported to the airport at 1700 hours.” “What time is it now?” “Be ready.” Jong Ho Kim sits on his cot and looks at the cloths that he wore when he was brought in for initial questioning. Get ready? He mechanically changes his cloths. What confession? What is happening? What went wrong? His questions remain unanswered as he is taken to the airport. The heavy cloud present that last time Jong Ho Kim travelled has lifted. People are talking, laughing, and relaxing. He catches snippets of wonderful news, turning point in the war, high treason by a decorated solider. He sits silently, reviewing his situation, wondering what he could have done differently, wondering what will happen to him, but mostly wondering about the cute blonde hair blue eyed girl and her family. He does not wonder long. A news bulletin runs the story of the shooting death of a 24 year of woman and her three year old daughter. The suspect in custody reportedly said that if he lost his family in 9/11 then this traitor should loose his. Jong Ho Kim overhears a middle aged woman in a business suit with a pearl necklace and diamond earrings remark good riddance as he is escorted to the departure gate and away from the country he once loved.
