Excel Material Specifications Manual Page: Page: Page: Page: 1 of of of of 5 Section 4: PIain Carbon SteeIs 1.0 Material: AISI 1018, AISI 1020 General Purpose Plain Carbon Steel castings. 2.0 Characteristics: AISI 1018 and AISI 1020 offer good cold forming properties, machinabiltiy and weldability. 3.0 Scope: This specification covers general purpose plain carbon steel castings having chemical analysis similar to wrought grades AISI 1018 and AISI 1020. The basis of this specification is ASTM A915/A915M “Standard Specification for Steel Castings, Carbon, and Alloy, Chemical Requirements Similar to Standard Wrought Grades” 4.0 Specification Numbers: The following table gives a cross reference of specification numbers which describe equivalent materials. AISI Number UNS Number Excel Number 1018 G10180 SC 1018 1020 G10200 SC 1020 5.0 Chemical Composition: A chemical analysis (heat analysis) from each heat of shall be made by the manufacturer. The analysis shall be made from a test sample preferably taken during pouring. The castings shall conform to the chemical composition listed in the table below. AISI 1018 Fe C Mn Ni Cr Mo P S Si Max. Balance 0.20 0.90 - - - 0.040 0.050 0.30 Min. - 0.15 0.60 - - - - - 0.60 AISI 1020 Fe C Mn Ni Cr Mo P S Si Max. Balance 0.23 0.80 - - - 0.040 0.050 0.60 Min. - 0.18 0.40 - - - - - 0.30 6.0 Heat Treat Requirements: Unless mechanical properties, hardness or heat treat requirements are otherwise specified on the purchase order or drawing, the casting shall be supplied in the normalized or annealed condition. 7.0 Mechanical Properties: When specified on the purchase order or blue print, tensile properties shall be determined from material representative heat from which the casting was poured in accordance with ASTM A781. Testing shall be conducted in accordance with ASTM A370. The specimen shall be heat treated in production furnaces to the same procedure as the casting it represents. The results shall conform to purchase order and/or blue print requirements. \ TitIe Specification SC 1018/1020 PIain Carbon SteeI Castings EXCELSC 1018/1020 Approved By: Metallurgical Engineer Date: January 5, 2005 Excel Foundry and Machine, Inc. These properties are provided for reference only. Heat Treatment Brinell Hardness Tensile Strength (PSI) Yield Strength (PSI) Elongation (%) Normalized 120 - 174 60,000 min 30,000 min 24 min 7.2 Brinell Hardness: If Brinell hardness is specified the hardness test shall be taken using a Brinell King Tester employing a 3000 kilogram(kg) load with a 10 millimeter(mm) ball. The hardness test shall be performed on a casting surface from which sand, scale, or other foreign matter has been removed. It shall be assured that the hardness tests are performed on surfaces which have had all the decarburized metal removed to ensure accurate assessment of casting hardness. 8.0 Surface Integrity and Roughness: The surface of the casting shall be examined visually and shall be free of adhering sand, scale, cracks, porosity, blowholes, shrinkage defects, and hot tears. Unacceptable surface discontinuities shall be removed and their removal verified by visual examination. Unacceptable visual surface discontinuities are shown in, but not limited to, Visual Method MSS-SP-55. 9.0 Quality/Dimensions: All castings shall be made in a workmanlike manner and shall conform to the dimensions on the drawings. 10.0 Additional Inspections: When specified by purchase order or drawing, additional inspections (mag particle, Xray, ultrasonic, dye penatrant, ect) may be required. Additional inspections shall be in accordance with ASTM A781/A781M and it’s supplemental requirements. 11.0 Weld Repair: Repair of major defects shall not be made until an approval for the repair has been granted in accordance with the information listed in the “Request to Repair” section of this standard. 11.1 Weld repairs shall be inspected to the same quality standards used to inspect the castings. If NDT is specified on the castings, the same standards shall be used to inspect the weld area. 11.2 Weld repairs are considered major when the cavity prepared for welding exceeds 20% of the wall thickness or 1 inch[25mm], whichever is smaller or the extent of the weld exceeds 10 in 2 [65 cm 2 ]. Castings containing a major weld repair shall receive a post weld heat treatment consisting of a thermal stress relief or complete reheat treatment. The post weld heat treatment shall be in accordance with the qualified and documented weld procedure used. 11.3 Any filler metal used in weld repair shall produce a weldment with chemistry similar to the chemistry of the casting. 11.4 Welders shall be qualified in accordance with ASTM A488/A488M. 11.5 Request to Repair: \ TitIe Specification SC 1018/1020 PIain Carbon SteeI Castings EXCELSC 1018/1020 Approved By: Metallurgical Engineer Date: January 5, 2005 Excel Foundry and Machine, Inc. Excel Material Specifications Manual Page: Page: Page: Page: 3 of of of of 5 Section 4: PIain Carbon SteeIs 11.5.1 Casting Supplier: The casting Supplier shall submit to Excel Purchasing Department, a written request for approval to repair including the proposed repair procedure. The proposed procedure for repair by welding shall include, as a minimum, the type of weld metal, welding process, weld preparation, preheat temperature, minimum inter-pass temperature and post weld heat treatment. The request shall state the location and size of the defect(s) to be repaired and the heat treated condition of the casting. 11.5.2 Excel Purchasing Department: The Purchasing Department shall forward the request and proposed procedure as received, to the Quality Department for approval or disapproval. The Quality Department will coordinate with the Engineering Department as required in order to determine acceptability. Upon receipt of the approval or disapproval of the proposed repair and procedure, the Purchasing Department shall notify the casting Supplier regarding the disposition of the defective casting. 12.0 Certification Requirements: 12.1 Certificate of Conformance: Required for all ASTM A27 materials purchased. 12.2 Chemical analysis and/or mechanical testing with the appropriate reports may be required by the Quality, Engineering or Purchasing Departments, or by the customer. 12.2.1 Chemical Analysis Report:: If stated as a requirement on the casting order, the Supplier shall furnish a chemical analysis report for each heat of castings. If no chemical analysis report is required, the Supplier is required to maintain a certificate of analysis at the suppliers facility for a minimum of two years. 12.2.2 Mechanical Properties Report:: If stated as a requirement on the casting order, the Supplier shall furnish information regarding the mechanical properties for each heat of castings. If no mechanical analysis report is required, the Supplier is required to maintain a material test report including mechanical properties for a minimum of two years. 13.0 Casting Identification: When possible, the drawing and/or casting order shall designate the type and location of the marking by the Supplier. Identification marking, as a minimum, shall include: -Casting part number -Heat and/or serial number 14.0 Ordering Information: The following information, as a minimum, should be included on the casting order: -Part name -Part number -Quantity required -Required Grade -Delivery schedule -Title, number and date of this standard -Test and inspection reports which are required for the particular order \ TitIe Specification SC 1018/1020 PIain Carbon SteeI Castings EXCELSC 1018/1020 Approved By: Metallurgical Engineer Date: January 5, 2005 Excel Foundry and Machine, Inc.
