The Germantown School Board last week delayed
action on a proposal to install temporary space at
Rockfield Elementary School, even as disagreements
emerged within the board as to whether or not the board
should pursue a permanent addition at the school instead.
The board delayed action April 13 on a proposal to
install modular space that could fit up to four classrooms to
address overcrowding issues at the school.
Superintendent Jeff Holmes said that while two companies submitted information, the district was waiting for estimates from ModSpace. He explained that ModSpace previously provided information on temporary space for
another district school in 2006. Holmes said that the delay
in information from ModSpace is because they have subcontractors examine the site to get firm prices to present to
the district. Holmes indicated that ModSpace would have
their information to the district by the end of the week.
According to information from district staff, Innovative
Modular Solutions estimated that a refurbished modular
space with bathrooms would cost $47,916 for a one year
lease while space without bathrooms would cost $40,044.
The DACCO firm submitted an estimate in which refurbished modular space would cost $33,600 with restrooms
and $28,620 without restrooms for one year.
Innovative Modular Solutions estimated that a new
space that was leased for a year would cost $119,304
with restrooms and $85,344 without restrooms. DACCO
provided an estimate stating that leasing new space with
restrooms would cost $75,924 while new space without
restrooms would cost $54,312.

School Board meeting. Photo by Thomas J. McKillen.
School Board President Robert Soderberg noted that it
would cost $1.5 million to build a permanent addition at
the school. However, that space would not be available
until the second semester of the 2015-16 school year. By
comparison, the modular space could be in place at
Rockfield for the start of the school year.
“Me personally, I don’t have an appetite for even a
temporary structure, even though we can get it by the
beginning of the school year,” board member Brian
Medved said. “I think we need to seriously look at a long
term solution, a permanent structure.”
Medved said he thought the cost of modular space

“I think we are very competitive with the
pricing and I feel we have great hostesses,”
he said. Prices are based on hotels, buses
and casinos for 40 customers per trip,
Chuck noted.
With groups of 10 or more, Jackpot
Trips will pick up passengers at bus-accessible locations, such as senior living facilities,
bars or other businesses. The company will
also cater to private parties. For example, if
one wants to have a birthday party with 40
people, “we would handle everything,”
said Chuck. “You could even bring a couple cases of beer and make it a kind of
‘party bus.’”
A party for the business’ one-year
anniversary is planned for Island Casino &
Resort in Harris, Michigan in June and the
business certainly has a lot to celebrate.
“We have a very good rapport with our
customers,” said Chuck. “Of course it’s
always more fun when you win, but either
way we have a wonderful time.”
With a base of approximately 1,000
customers, at least 90 percent of Jackpot
Tours clients are repeat customers, Chuck
said. The company sends its official customers a quarterly schedule of trips and
these individuals are eligible for bonus promotions.

2014 and since then they have ventured out

District summarizes survey results
Residents asked for views on facility improvements
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
The Germantown School Board got a
glimpse of the results of a community and
parent facilities sentiment survey that was
conducted earlier this spring.
The survey, which was answered by
approximately 1,000 people, sought district residents views on a variety of schooldistrict-related issues. The district sought
responses through a mailing sent out to district residents. Also, an email blast was sent
out, and the survey was mentioned on the
district website.
The survey asked several referendumrelated questions. Among the responses to
referendum-related questions:
•62.59 percent responded yes to holding a referendum to build a new elementary
school;
•75.38 percent answered yes to holding a referendum to increase school capacity or expand elementary support areas;
•58.02 percent of respondents
answered yes to holding a referendum to
build a new field house;
•57.39 percent answered no to holding a referendum to upgrade outdoor athletic fields;
•69.38 percent answered yes to holding a referendum to build a new auditorium;
and,
•90.78 percent of respondents
answered yes to a question asking if any
referendum should be considered.
In another referendum-related question,
73.07 percent of respondents answered
yes to holding a referendum to build a new
swimming pool. Board member Brian
Medved later noted that the village of
Germantown Park and Recreation
Department conducted a survey and “the
overwhelming response from everybody
was we need a pool in Germantown.”
“That was the big issue,” Medved said.
School Board President Robert
Soderberg said overall the responses to the
referendum-related question “were somewhat consistent” except for the athletic
fields questions.
“It would appear, based on the
30,000-foot-level in numbers, that there’s a
lot of support for whatever path the board
is set to go down. They see the opportunity
like the board sees opportunities,”
Soderberg said.
Several questions also sought the extent
of support for specific items. When respondents were asked how likely they would
support a plan that provides funding to renovate or add elementary classroom space
at each school, 59.03 percent of respondents said very likely, 25.94 percent of
respondents said somewhat likely while
12.25 percent said not likely, with 2.77
percent answering not sure.
When asked how likely they would be
to support a plan that provides funding to
upgrade some aging building infrastructure, 47.83 percent of respondents said
very likely, 35.64 percent said somewhat
likely, 10.06 percent said not likely while
the remaining respondents answered they
were not sure.
When asked what advice they would
give to the district regarding the use of
older and small schools as the district develops its long range facility plan, 47.03 percent said the district should consider closing
smaller schools and building larger, more
efficient schools; 32.19 percent said the district should continue to invest in older and
smaller schools while 20.77 percent were
not sure nor had an opinion.
According to answers provided in the
survey, 65.97 percent of respondents did
not graduate nor had children who graduated from the school district. In another
question, 57.66 percent of respondents
said they had children attending school in
the district while 42.34 percent did not.
Also, 80.62 percent of respondents were
not district employees while 19.38 percent
were district employees. Of those who
responded to the survey, 87.71 percent
said they resided within the district.
The district covers all or part of three
towns and two villages. The greatest percentage of responses (61.81 percent) came
from village of Germantown residents followed by residents in the village of Richfield
(12.95 percent), town of Germantown
(8.22 percent), town of Jackson (5.86 percent) and town of Polk (.19 percent).
Of those answering the survey, 37.33
percent were between the ages of 36-45,
29.11 percent were between the ages of

ages of 56-64, 11.34 percent were

Toward the end of discussion at the
board meeting, Holmes indicated the
responses will undergo further statistical
analysis.

would be lower than the estimates that have
been provided to the board.
“I don’t like band aids on a problem,”
he said.
Board member Michael Loth also disagreed with installing temporary space at
Rockfield.
“I don’t have a palette for putting in
temporary classrooms,” Loth said.
Loth asked if the board should add permanent space at Rockfield, knowing that it
wouldn’t be ready until second semester but
knowing “that relief is coming pretty fast
versus tearing up the school yard to put in
temporary housing.”
Soderberg said the modular space
“would be money spent wisely to alleviate
the overcrowding, unless we have some
other solution to address that at Rockfield.”
Director of Business and Auxiliary
Services Ric Ericksen reference information
from district files which indicated that if the
district was to lease modular space for
three or more years, it may as well build
permanent space.
The item will be on the agenda for the
next board meeting.

Dear Dr. Winter,
My crowned tooth, #19 has broken to the gum line almost 2
months ago. I have been researching dental implants since my
current dentist doesn’t do implants. During this time I learned
about the AAID, which seems to have members serious about
implants. I obtained your name through the AAID American
Academy of Implant Dentistry’s website.
I am of course researching price but also products and
procedures. I enclosed a digital x-ray of my broken tooth for you
to evaluate.
Everyplace I've gone to has indicated the need for bone grafting
and then the rest of the implant procedure. I've gone to an oral
surgeon and a periodontal specialist who both leave the crown for
the dentist to complete. I noticed on your website that you do the
surgery and the chimney and crown placement. Can you give me
the products you use and associated fees? Thank you in advance
for your time. K.J.
Dear Kathy, I am sorry you broke your tooth and am happy you
are doing some research to become well informed.
The x-ray you sent only shows me part of the story. I need to see
the opposing tooth, your biting scheme and the width of the bone
that is left around the root. I also need to see your remaining teeth
to make sure they aren’t having issues.
The answers you have been give are all accurate. Usually we take
the root out and graft the area with bone. This will help preserve
the dimension of bone in the area prior to placement of your
implant. Your insurance, if you have any is usually able to help
with the extraction cost but will often not cover the cost of socket
grafting or implant placement.
The implant, chimney and crown costs depend on the labs we
use and I offer two different implant systems which both work
fabulously if patients are in need of a lesser expensive option.
I use microscopic dental labs that spend a lot of time making
the implant chimney and crown according to my specifications.
Chimneys or “abutments” can be pre-made sometimes and at other
times a custom abutment may be needed to provide better
contours, support and strength for an implant crown.
If a patient has a budget that will determine what they do we
can make arrangements to use less expensive labs to meet their
needs. The concept of Upgradeable Dentistry that Dr. Winter
lectures about describes how we try and provide the implant
service, denture service or reconstruction service that meets your
budget and your cosmetic needs. There is a difference in what you
receive when you utilize master dental ceramists versus using a
larger volume dental lab.
Without seeing you and evaluating the quality and quantity of
your remaining bone, I can not give you fees but I can offer you
and our readers a complimentary consultation to review your
options with you. We also offer comprehensive examination and x-
Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter
ray visits for patients that want to get all costs the day they come
in for their visit. We do offer interest free financing for up to 2
years through Care Credit and we offer I-Care that won’t refuse
anyone for credit if they have two forms of debit or credit cards
if they are not eligible for Care Credit.
Please visit my website to see examples of my work and videos
of patient testimonials.
I wish you luck and would be happy to see you for a
complimentary consultation if you wish. I use two different
implant systems; one of them is BioHorizons tapered internal
with Laser Lok technology and the other is MIS Seven implants.
Feel free to visit their websites to learn more about their
technologies.
They are both amazing companies that offer many restorative
options. In this day and age most implant systems work and are
made of high strength titanium alloy. The specifics of implant
design, surface coating, crestal implant design are all features
your dentist should be able to discuss with you if you ask.
I do not speak for the AAID and do not give opinions on their
behalf. I simply have stated what I do in my practice. I am board
certified in Implant Dentistry by the American Board of Oral
Implantologists/Implant Dentists through that organization.
You may call our office to schedule a visit at 414-464-9021 and
mention you spoke to me via e-mail for a special consideration.
Yours for better dentistry,

OFFICIAL NOTICE
TO GERMANTOWN
WATER UTILITY CUSTOMERS
The Germantown Water Utility will be performing its annual water main
flushing on April 13 through May 13, 2015. The flushing process
will be executed during the day between the hours of 9:00 AM and
3:00 PM. The water main flushing will remove most of the naturally
occurring minerals which are harmless, but at the same time may discolor the water. Should you observe Water Utility personnel working in your
neighborhood, please limit your usage of the water for 30 to 45 minutes
after the flushing has occurred, to insure the water is clear of
discoloration before it is drawn into your water system.
Should you find discoloration in your water system, please
do not wash clothes until the water has cleared.

Options to consider for your flooring project
If you’ve repainted the walls, added new
furniture and changed your sofa pillows, yet
something is still amiss in your home, consider that large surface area: the floor. Floors
set the tone of your living space.
To avoid surprises and unexpected costs,
try these tips from the World Floor Covering
Association.
Find The Right Flooring
When it comes to selecting the most
appropriate flooring for your home, consider
how it will be used and how often.
A high-traffic room demands materials
that can stand up to wear and tear. Highquality flooring is essential. And buying from
a reputable retailer—one who knows their
products, gets to know their customers and
will be there to stand behind what they recommend and sell—is going to pay off down
the road.
Not all flooring is the same. In every category—carpet, tile, resilient, laminate, hardwood—there are products of varying quality.
It is important to do your research and, just
as important, to work with a retailer who has
firsthand history with the flooring products
they sell and the manufacturers that make
them.
Maintenance is another key consideration. Some floors require more upkeep than
others. For instance, some types of hardwood can become dull if not swept or
mopped daily. If you have kids or pets, con-
sider the following: multi-colored, textured
carpet to hide blemishes and wear; engineered wood offering diamond-hard surface
treatments to avoid abrasions; or resilient
vinyl, which can be made to look like many
other types of flooring and is very durable
and easy to clean. Ceramic tile is another
good option for high traffic.
The area of the country in which you live
has an impact on the flooring you choose,
too. How much sunlight does the room get?
Many flooring materials won’t fade, but
some—including carpet—might. Humidity can
affect durability. Some floors are fine in
humid environments but others—such as
wood—are not. Are you considering radiant
heat under your floors? Not all surface materials are compatible with this option.
Working with a knowledgeable retailer will
be very helpful when making final decisions.
Considering Overall Design
Think about how the room will be furnished. Would you like to warm up the room
with a carpet or cool it down with ceramic?
Do you want a patterned or brightly colored
floor to liven up neutral furniture or a quiet
background to help statement pieces stand
out? Cultivate your own design ideas, then
call on the knowledge and experience of a
reliable flooring retailer to see it through.
Your Path To Purchasing
Check out your flooring options in person. Online research is important but talking

with a professional who deals in flooring
every day is essential. Plus, there’s no substitute for seeing and touching the flooring you
wish to purchase.
There are a few more things to consider.
The following list of questions prepared by
the World Floor Covering Association can
help you make an informed choice and
avoid unexpected costs and surprises:
Does the retailer offer a complimentary
inspection prior to installation to determine
what kind of substrate you have and whether
it is flat?
What does the retailer charge to remove
and dispose of old flooring? Removing flooring can increase costs substantially, so you

Compost for a better lawn
By Tresa Erickson
Do you compost? Do you save grass
clippings, leaves, yard waste, kitchen scraps
and more for the compost bin? If so, you
have some really good fertilizer on your
hands, and unlike traditional chemicalbased fertilizers, your compost will not harm
the environment.
Compost is great for top-dressing lawns
two or three times a year. It adds vital nutrients to the lawn, including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. It works fast, doesn’t
smell and won’t stain concrete or burn the
grass. And, it is easy to apply.
To Learn More
Call Us At
No matter where you live, the best time
to top-dress your lawn is when the grass is
actively growing. If you live in an area with
a cool climate, spring to mid-summer is
ideal. If you live in a warm climate, midsummer is ideal.
Top-dressing a lawn with compost is
easy. First, you need to aerate and seed the
lawn. Then, you can apply the compost.
Make sure the compost is finely textured.
This will ensure even raking later. If your
compost is coarse and lumpy, consider purchasing some from a nursery.
Apply the compost on a dry, calm day.
Shovel some around the yard in piles and
then spread it out in a thin layer. When you
are finished, you should be able to see more
grass than compost. If you don’t, you have
spread it too thickly and it could smother the
grass.
Next, water the compost for about 20
minutes or so. Then, leave it be. Give it time
to work its way into the soil, break down
and release vital nutrients. After a week, you
should be able to mow and water your lawn
as usual. Within a few weeks, you should
begin to see some improvement.
Top-dressing your lawn with compost a
few times a year will do it good. You will
have a fuller, greener, healthier lawn. More
importantly, you will make Mother Earth
happy and never have to rely on chemicalbased fertilizers again.

From page 17
may want to find flooring that can go over
your existing flooring.
Will your doors clear your new floors? If
not, the doors may need to be trimmed to
accommodate the new height, or you might
want to choose alternative flooring materials.
Does the retailer charge to move furniture? Be sure to mention heavy items that
might not be found in every home, such as a
piano.
If the new flooring is going into a bathroom, will the retailer remove the toilet as
part of their installation?
Does your new flooring need to be accli-
mated prior to installation?
Will the installers clean up after themselves?
Prepare For Installation
The retailer should provide a checklist on
how to prepare for installation. In addition, if
your renovation project involves painting or
staining walls where new floors are going to
be put down, the wall treatment should be
completed first. Clear the room. Remove fragile and valuable items and appliances,
books and decorations. Artwork and photographs on the walls should also be taken
down.
Clear a path for the installation crew to
carry bulky, heavy items in and out. When
they arrive, ask the installers to go over their
plans with you so you know exactly what to
expect. Make sure patterned floors will be
set down in the right direction.
Post-installation
Thoroughly inspect the flooring.
Immediately bring any concerns to the store’s
attention.
Most importantly, enjoy your new floors!

Refreshing innovations
By Tresa Erickson
It is not uncommon for homes built in
the 1970s to have paneled walls. Paneling
was quite popular then, but not so much
anymore. If you have paneling in your
home, do not despair. You can reinvent it
with a little elbow grease. Here are some
ideas.
Paint is one of the easiest and most
inexpensive ways to reinvent wood paneling. You can go with any color you want,
and depending upon the look you are
after, you can fill the grooves or leave
them unfilled. If you are looking to create
stripes, for example, you might want to
leave the grooves as are and use them as
a guide to mark off the stripes. After a light
sanding and cleaning, you will be all
ready to prime and paint.
If paint is not your thing, perhaps wallpaper is. Wallpaper comes in a variety of
texture and patterns. You can use almost
any wallpaper you want, and the prep
work is fairly easy. Just fill the grooves with
joint compound, sand, clean and apply
liner or sizing and the wallpaper.
Plaster is another option, but it will take
some time to do. There are many types
available for novices. For the best results,
you should prime the paneling, attach the
metal lath and apply the plaster as recommended. Depending upon your needs,
you can create a smooth, glossy finish or
an earthy, flat finish.
Love the look of your paneling? Keep
it and give it an update with a new finish
or new trim. You can sand, stain and varnish solid wood paneling just like you
would any solid wood furniture piece. You
can even use stencils and painter’s tape to
create a pattern. Laminate wood paneling
is a bit more difficult, but can still be sanded and stained. The stain may not penetrate evenly, however, so you might want
to experiment in a corner first. You can create any number of patterns on paneling
with molding. Just cut the trim, nail it to the
paneling, putty the holes and paint or stain
the trim as you see fit.
None of these ideas appeal to you?
Check online and at your local hardware
store for further suggestions. And remember, if nothing appeals to you, you can
always remove the paneling. Just be
aware that what you uncover may not be
in the best of condition. Installing new drywall can be time consuming and costly.

Preparing for spring flooding
As temperatures rise and the snowpack
begins to melt, homeowners should prepare
for the possibility of spring flooding.
Communities across the country, particularly
in the Northeast and Midwest, are at risk for
flooding.
Spring rains saturate the frozen ground,
which cannot quickly absorb runoff, accumulating on the surface or flowing into streams
and rivers, where the excess water spills over
the banks.
Floods are the nation’s number one natural disaster, and all 50 states have experi-

enced a flood in the past five years.
Everyone lives in a flood zone, so no matter
where you live in the United States, you are
at risk of flooding. However, most homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flood damage,
and without a flood insurance policy, you
could have to pay for damage out of your
own pocket.
Here are five things you can do to financially protect what matters:
Know your risk. Use the One-Step Flood
Risk Profile, available on FloodSmart.gov to
determine your flood risk and locate a flood
insurance agent in your area.
Purchase a flood insurance policy.
Typically, there is a 30-day waiting period
before flood insurance goes into effect, so
protect what matters now by purchasing a
policy before the snow starts to melt.
Check your flood insurance policy. Know
what is covered and what you need to file a
claim. If you do not have a flood insurance
policy, talk with your flood insurance agent
about purchasing coverage for future losses.
Document your belongings to support a
flood
insurance
claim.
Visit
KnowYourStuff.org to create your home
inventory.
Create and share a family emergency
plan. Make sure it includes evacuation routes
from home, work, and school. Assemble an
emergency supplies kit with drinking water,
canned food, first aid supplies, blankets, a
radio, and a flashlight. Learn more at
Ready.gov/floods.
Go to FloodSmart.gov or call 888-3566370 for more information. Don’t be caught
off guard by spring flooding. Prepare in
advance to protect what matters.

While based in Richfield, the Server
Products brand is global, as the company
will be at trade shows in Italy, Dubai, India,
Indonesia, Hong Kong, Brazil and Mexico
this year, along with having a presence at
closer venues in Portland, Anaheim and
Chicago.
"It didn't happen overnight, that's for
sure," Brent Henschel, marketing and communications coordinator, said of the company's growth on the international market.
"We are slowly getting more and more of
our volume internationally.”
According to information from the company, Server Products is a leader in portion
controlled dispensing and point of use holding of food products in ambient, chilled and
heated settings for a kitchen or food service
operation. Henschel said the company's
products involve portion control dispensing
and point-of-use holding of food products at
ambient, heated and cooled temperatures.
Within that realm, Server Products seeks
to deliver sustainability and portion control,
Henschel said. He noted that the pumps
created by the company are stainless steel
that will last for up to 25 years.
He also mentioned a company
advancement on a continuous flow dipper
well, which washes food and bacteria off
utensils by keeping water continuously flowing. That water goes into sewers, which
wastes water. As an advancement to that,
Server Products offers a piece of equipment
called a Conserve Well, which is attached
where a flow dipper well would be.
Henschel explained the Conserve Well
heats the water to 140 degrees. According
to Henschel, replacing a dipper well with a
Conserve Well can save an operation more
than 250,000 gallons of water per year.
"We're really trying to address the food
industry's need for sustainability, because
it's not just a trend anymore," Henschel
said. "It makes business sense and it's the
right thing to do. We try to live that way,
and it's becoming more and more not just a
trend, it's a reality."
While the majority of the company's
sales are in the United States, Henschel
explained that the company has built up
international relationships with manufacturer representatives and distributors in
Europe, the Middle east, Asia, and
Australia.
"There's a lot of research and homework we have to do to make sure we're
delivering the right product to the right
country,” Henschel said.
That's a long way from the company's
beginnings in the basement of a flour mill in
Menomonee Falls in 1949. The company
was founded by Alfred Wickesberg, and its
first product addressed the need of movie
theater operators who needed an easy way
to melt and serve butter for freshly popped
popcorn. The answer was the industry's first
automatic butter warmer and dispenser.
"It did grow slowly," Henschel said,
explaining how it took several years for the
company to grow out of the basement and
into the whole mill building. The current production facility was constructed in 1975,
with the offices added at the in 2000-01.
There are more than 100 people employed
by Server Products.
Henschel explained that after the butter
server was developed, the company began
to get into pumping of fluids for the food
service industry, such as syrups for beverages and different sodas, flavoring and topping.
"Then he (Wickesberg) spawned into
something that he's really passionate about,
which is ice cream," Henschel said. "He
wanted way to heat and dispense fudge for
hot fudge sundaes."
That interest led to the FSP Fudge
Server which is seen in ice cream and
yogurt shops across the country.
The company remains in the family, as
the current company president is the granddaughter of Alfred Wickesberg.
"Our passion today is helping operators
and chain serve their food serving and dispensing problems, that's what drives us.
We listen to the market — what are their
problems — and we work with them to help
solve their problems," Henschel said.
Commission supports changes for
Germantown Aurora Healthcare site
The Germantown Plan Commission supported a site plan application that will
allow the Aurora Healthcare to convert
office space in the village to a clinic.
Aurora Healthcare is proposing to convert an existing corporate office space at
the back of its facility at W180 N1107
River Lane to a specialty medical and diagnostic clinic. According to information in the
village staff report, the new clinic will provide specialty services being relocated
from the Menomonee Falls clinic along wit
other services. Services that will be provid-
ed at the new facility will be orthopedic,
cardiology, oncology and infusion and outpatient surgery will be added to the
Germantown facility.
As part of the changes, a 405-squarefoot vestibule and a free standing canopy
will be added on the north elevation of the
building. Also, parking and landscaping
changes will be made at the 14 acre site.
The commission supported the request at its
April 13 meeting.
