MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR At the start of the Veterans Day program at Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School in Jackson Nov. 7, Michael Riebe of the Henry F. Gumm American Legion Post in Jackson asked those who have served and are currently serving in the armed forces to stand. Riebe first asked those who served during World War II era to stand. Then, over the next few minutes, he made the same request for those who served during the Korean War era and during the 1960s — including the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Berlin Crisis and the Vietnam War era. Riebe continued, asking those to served during the conflicts of the 1980s, which included military action in Grenada and Panama, to stand. Then he asked who served in the miliary from the 1990s to the present — and which includes miliary action in Iraq and Afghanistan — to stand. Gradually, over several minutes, more people came up from their seats at Riebe’s request. “Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for service,” Riebe said, with students and community members in attendance applauding in response for several minutes. The program one was of several Veterans Days programs scheduled across the county over the past several days. The American Legion Post I in Germantown will be holding its program at 10:45 a.m. Nov. 10 at the Germantown Veterans TO RECEIVE SPECIAL VIP OFFERS! Along the two-mile trek, participants visited with neighboring Catholic school members, enjoyed the beautiful day, and were encouraged to stop for a treat from the 14 Catholic high schools who sponsored "Treat and Tweet" stops along the way. "Our family feels so blessed to be a part of the St. Boniface Community," said Lisa Fernandez, St. Boniface School parent. "Just look at how many families showed up today to celebrate!" Representation from students, parents, teachers, and friends from St. Boniface totaled 184. The pledges received for the St. Boniface walkers will substantially increase the school's tuition assistance Angel Fund. The fund helps make Catholic education accessible to any child who wants it. Students from St. Boniface also helped collect over 1000 pairs of gently-used shoes for distribution to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Germantown Community Garden survived a difficult inaugural year in 2012 to produce a bounty of produce for its participants, the master gardener overseeing the garden said Nov. 5. Master Gardener Cindy Helt updated the Washington County Education and Culture Committee on the initial development of the community garden. According to information from Helt, “the purpose of the community gardens is to give community members the opportunity to have garden space. Many of our garden ‘renters’ live in an apartment or condo; some live in rented houses where they do not feel they can dig up the yard for a garden. All gardeners are welcome, whether they are beginners or have experience. Each gardener decides what they want to put in their individual plot. Flowers and/or vegetables are welcome.” The Germantown Community Garden was started as a joint project between the Washington County Master Gardeners and the Germantown Park and Recreation Department. Helt explained that the Park and Recreation Department approached the county’s master gardeners and sought guidance on creating a community garden. “There were three of us (master gardeners) who tend to live down that way and we were excited to get involved with a project that wasn’t in West Bend or Kewaskum or somewhere further north,” Helt said. The community garden is currently located on village property in the Dheinsville Historic Park along Maple Road. For the first year, there were 10 plots for eight gardeners. Helt said the master gardeners were there to provide assistance as needed, with the Recreation Department overseeing the garden. By the end of the season, there was a waiting list of four people. “It said to us then we need to expand the following year,” Helt said. Helt noted that 2012 was a “hideous year for gardening” due to a drought and heat, and she was pleased that the gardeners involved that year came back this year. Following the first year, the plot was moved further north to allow for the garden to be expanded, and the whole space is 10x20 feet. For this year’s community garden, there were14 gardeners and two plots for the master gardeners of Washington County, with an additional area reserved for compost. The cost for a plot rental is $30 and $50 for two plots. Helt said the Park and Recreation Department provided four fenceposts per plot. Helt said that gardeners used their own tools instead of donated tools that were available. She added that gardeners using their own tools limited the spread of disease in the garden. Helt said no perennials were allowed because they are difficult to control. In addition, gardeners agreed to monitor weeds in their own gardens and along the edges. “These are just the responsibilities of some good gardening practices,” she said. Helt praised the cooperation of the Germantown Park and Recreation Department, from previous director Brett Altergott and later interim director Joe Masiarchin to current director Justin Casperson. “It’s been unbelievable. The teamwork on this project — I just can’t say enough,” Helt said. For the two plots used by the master gardeners, Helt explained that she is part of the Healthy People project in Washington County. According to Helt, one of the concerns of that committee is how to get more produce to county residents. One of the solutions that came through was to grow items to donate to the Germantown Senior Center. Helt said the master gardeners surveyed seniors to decide what to plant in the garden. Helt said she was hoping to donate 100 pounds of produce to the Germantown Senior Center. By the end of the year, more than 300 pounds were donated to the center. From this year, Helt said the master gardeners learned that heirloom tomatoes “were not appropriate” as some measured at two pounds, and a senior doesn’t want a tomato that size. Also, seniors were willing to try new things such as black cherry tomatoes, she said. Helt said there are five gardeners who have already committed to returning next year. Helt told the story of one gardener who planted seeds for peppers in June. While that is too late to begin growing peppers, the master gardeners didn’t step in. “To me, part of the joy in gardening is the discovery and learning from your mistakes,” Helt said. “If nothing else, you come back next season and you go ‘I’m not going to that again.’” Washington County Supervisor Tim Michalak, who is also an alderman on the Hartford Common Council, said “I would love to start something like in Hartford, because I see there is a real need. There is a lot of houses packed close together in (the city).” News & Events Around the village and county Senior Center tours The Germantown Senior Center is offering the following one-day tours to area seniors. McKillen. ...KML event From page 1 Memorial, which is located at the southeast corner of Freistadt Road and Park Avenue. A Veterans Day program will be held at the Old Courthouse Museum in West Bend at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 while another program is scheduled at the UW-Washington County campus at noon the same day. The Nov. 7 program was the 11th Veterans Day program that was held by Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School and the first that was held in the school’s new Performing Arts Center. Later in the program, veterans in attendance stood again as the Kettle Moraine Lutheran wind symphony and concert choir performed the songs of the various branches. Pastor Jeremy Koehler of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mequon then led those in attendance in responsive litany. “Previous generations have fought and sacrificed even their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today,” Koehler said. “Be with us and bless those who have served in the past,” attendees said in response. “Continue to inspire men and women with a life of country and self-sacrificing attitude that puts their families and fellow citizens before their own comfort and safety.” Koehler — who served in the military from 1995-2007 — began his message with a thank you. “From one veteran to another, thank you. Thank you for your sacrifice, thank you for being willing to do what most would not, maybe some cannot, be willing to put yourself in harm’s way for people who you know and millions that you don’t — all for the sake of freedom,” Koehler said. “That is given.” Koehler then explained how “this is not the end” asking what happens after the program is over. Koehler said that as he was leaving the service, he was asked “what will you do now?” In response, he said he planned to be a pastor at a church. “They said, ‘Is that the end?’ My initial response was ‘yes.’ Now that I think about it, I should have said ‘no,’ because it’s not the end,” Koehler said. “You can take off the uniform, but it’s not the end of your commitment, it’s not the end of your sacrifice, it’s not the end of your duty.” Koehler also mentioned the bonds formed between those in the service, and said it’s not the end when veterans no longer serve in the same way they once did. “Everything we did was done for a purpose. It was done for a cost, and it was all worth it, wasn’t it? For the freedom of the people you see here today,” he said. Toward the end of the program, Riebe read selected verses from the poem “A Soldier Died Today.” “If we cannot do him honor while he's here to hear the praise/ Then at least let's give him homage at the ending of his days/Perhaps just a simple headline in a paper that would say/Our Country is in mourning, for a soldier died today.” Turn to page 19 BRAKES • TUNE-UPS • OIL CHANGES • EXHAUST SYSTEMS • BATTERIES • SHOCKS • AND SO MUCH MORE! Whether it be time, money, material possessions or kindness, giving of oneself–especially during this time of year–is not only a blessing for the recipient, but a spirit-lifter for the giver. Jim Chrisien, interim director of the St. Boniface Food Pantry in Germantown, said the community spirit that comes alive through this process is astounding. "It's really enlightening and amazing how the community continues to help us and give to us," he said. "I'm just amazed by the food that comes in, and the volunteers here are smiling and enjoying what they're doing. And that's the whole point–we're supposed to be giving joyfully." This time of year is especially crucial for giving, said Diane Schaejbe, treasurer of the Full Shelf Food Pantry in West Bend. She said record numbers of residents seek help toward the end of the year, with November traditionally having the highest total of approximately 600 families in need of pantry services. "We see the highest need during this time of year, so we really encourage everyone to give, and people do seem to give more during these months," Schaejbe said. "Then if we are left with extra, we have that surplus for the months when we don't see as many donations coming in–such as January, February and March.” She noted that as a rule, the community genuinely wants to reach out a helping hand; they just aren’t always sure how to go about it. “Many people want to give in some way, but they don't know how, which is why giving to an organization like us is a good way to get food and other supplies to the people who need them,” Schaejbe said. Other area organizations also up their yearround efforts during the lean winter months. In September, the United Way of Washington County kicked off its 2013 campaign with more than 500 volunteers packaging 61,048 meals for local food pantries. "The first goal we set for the campaign was to mobilize more than 200 volunteers to help with a growing need in Washington County–hunger," stated Kristin Brandner, United Way Executive Director. "To have more than double the number of volunteers we originally planned to recruit has been inspiring and speaks volumes of the caring residents of our local community." Without such support, the non-profit would not be able to provide the funding it currently does to help the more than 28,000 individuals throughout Washington County. “The needs continue to grow and more and more local residents are reaching out for support–and some for the first time. For example, the Full Shelf Food Pantry served over 420 first-time families last year,” said Brander. She emphasized, "It takes the whole community working together to create change.” Although one of the most common ways to give, feeding the hungry is not the only need at this time of year. The Gingerbread House, which is part of the Youth and Family Project in West Bend, is a giftgiving program that provides area families with a proper Christmas. Going into its 14th year, the program assists in getting between 500 and 600 families "adopted" every year, said coordinator Linda White. "Our mission is that no child in Washington County go without a Christmas," she said, explaining how qualifying families–parents and children alike–get the requests on their "wish lists" granted and walk away with presents, and a holiday meal if they want one. "We focus on the whole family, not just the kids, because little people are willing to give up their gifts if Mom and Dad don't have something under the tree, too." White said she spearheaded the program when she saw the need for an additional gift-giving initiative in the county above and beyond what was already offered. The Gingerbread House–which also provides families with winter coats and other clothing items–quickly rose to the level of being considered "the Christmas program of Washington County." This is in no small part thanks to across-theboard community assistance, she said. "You would be hard-pressed to find someone in Washington County who has not had some kind of involvement in the program, and that is very exciting," White said. "The fact that so many individuals, organizations, churches and businesses have stepped up to the plate to put smiles on the faces of others for Christmas really speaks a lot of the community. (Participating) is an emotional and positive experience that is truly about giving." Chrisien said it all comes down to the age-old principle of treating others as one would want to be treated in similar circumstances. "There's obviously the religious aspect of taking care of the poor and the hungry, but it's also about just helping another human being and reaching out to others in your neighborhood who are down on their luck," he said. "That's what we all should be doing if we have the means–taking care of people who need it." Ways to help... Guest column Be wary of scams related to the ACA BY J.B. VAN HOLLEN ATTORNEY G ENERAL , WISCONSIN Any time a new, large-scale program, such as the Affordable Care Act (ACA), is unveiled, fraudsters and identity thieves may try to take advantage of consumers who may not be familiar with the specifics of the program. Of particular concern is the potential for fraudulent websites designed to obtain consumers’ personal information or steal their money. Reports of suspicious websites, advertisements, telemarketing calls and door-to-door solicitations have turned up since the rollout. Therefore, to protect your personal information and your pocketbooks, keep in mind the following precautions when signing up for an ACA program: •Stop. Call. Confirm. Protect your social security number, health information and financial information. Before you give out any personal, health, or financial information STOP. CALL the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance (OCI). CONFIRM with OCI that the entity is legitimate. If someone discourages you from contacting OCI, or pressures you into giving up private information, you may be dealing with a fraudster. OCI’s contact information is: Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance, Phone: (608) 266-3585, Madison; (800) 236-8517, statewide; Website: http://oci.wi.gov •Verify the legitimacy of websites you visit. Using search engines may lead you to fraudulent websites if you are not careful. A good practice is to type the name of the website you want into your browser window, rather than merely searching for information about the Affordable Care Act. The official, primary site is healthcare.gov. Other federal and state governmental websites provide links to legitimate sites relating to the ACA. •Keep good records. Keep a record of everyone who assists you, who they work for, and their telephone number, address, email address, and website. S TATE OF •Think before signing. Don’t sign anything you don’t fully understand. •Be suspicious. Are you being asked to transact business in an unusual way – for example by using money order, or by buying J.B. Van Hollen a money card? Stop, call and confirm. Also note, insurance discount cards are not the same as insurance. •Don’t give into high pressure tactics. Threats, limited time offers or misinformation about Medicare are “red flags.” You cannot go to jail for failing to enroll in the Affordable Care Act. The ACA’s enrollment period runs through March 31, 2014, therefore, you should not feel pressure to decide on a plan “today.” If you are on Medicare, you do not need to enroll in the ACA or reapply for Medicare. •If in doubt, check with the Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance (OCI). OCI licenses anyone authorized to engage in the business of insurance in Wisconsin, and OCI can verify the legitimacy of anyone purporting to be trained to help enroll people in the Affordable Care Act. And, as always, if you suspect criminal activity, contact local law enforcement, or contact the Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP) at 800-4227128. My office, in cooperation with the OCI and DATCP, is committed to prosecuting fraud and will work together protect Wisconsin consumers. ...News and Events From page 1 Group will depart from Germantown Marketplace at 8:45 a.m. and return at approximately 5:15 p.m. The cost is $99. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Menomonee Falls girls volleyball team advanced to the state semifinal with a 25-17, 25-17, 16-25, 25-17 win over Pius XI at the state tournament at the Resch Center in Green Bay Nov. 7. Simone Lee led Menomonee Falls with 21 kills while Abby Becker added 16 kills. Menomonee Falls will face Sun Prairie, which beat Appleton North in the other early quarterfinal, 23-25, 20-25, 25-18, 2513, 15-13 Menomonee Falls advanced to the state tournament when it swept its way to another sectional title Nov. 2, beating Mukwonago 25-12,25-16, 25-12. With the win, the Indians will be making their third trip to the state tournament in the past four years. "I think we can focus more on the winning and the playing aspect (at state), setter and right side hitter Becker said afterward. The opponent will be different than projected, as Pius XI staged the biggest upset of the postseason, defeating Divine Savior Holy Angels. Following the Mukwonago win, Lee said that there so many teammates who were part of previous state trips, it's a good opportunity for them to get back there and new players to experience playing in the Resch Center. Menomonee Falls jumped into the lead in the first game against Mukwonago, opening up a 7-1 lead that included two kills by Lee. Mukwonago stayed close with Menomonee Falls in the early stages of the second game, as a kill by Mukwonago’s Ellie Michalski reduced Menomonee Falls lead to 13-11. But Menomonee Falls scored the next three points and finished the game by scoring five consecutive points. In the third game, Menomonee Falls had three, four, and five point scoring runs to close out the match. "I think we made minimum errors," Von Bank said of the sectional final, finishing a run in which Menomonee Falls swept all three opponents in its sectional bracket. Menomonee Falls Coach J.C. Bruns said told his team "this is the least excited I've been about winning a sectional final. It has nothing to do with not being happy for them, it has everything to do with our team expectations and what our goals were." Bruns said he was not worried about his team's confidence or them being rattled at the sectional level. "They knew very clearly not to take anybody lightly. I think we played that way, to make sure we weren't taking them lightly, because (Mukwonago) is a very solid team," Bruns said. -By Thomas J. With that in mind, Krista Davis, Regional HR Director for Reckitt Benckiser, whose entrepreneurial culture has made it an attractive workplace environment for many, has the following suggestions as you contemplate your next career move: 1. Determine your unique skills: What are your strengths? What makes you happy? What talents and abilities do you have that most people don’t? 2. How do you like to work: Do you prefer interpreting and critically assessing information? Putting abstract ideas and concepts together or taking them apart? Gathering, sorting and organizing information or figuring out calculations? Or matching, selecting and making sure directions and standards are followed correctly? Would you rather work with people, with things or with concepts? 3. Where do you like to work? A small regional office? Corporate headquarters? A home office? How often do you like to work away from home? Do you like to travel? Some companies encourage employees to experience the work culture of other countries. 4. Create a road map: Where do you want to be in five or 10 years? Develop a road map to get to where you want to be and stick to it. 5. Test the waters: Try an internship or apprenticeship to see if the job is right for you and to get your foot in the door. 6. Look for a company that shares your values: That may mean working for a nonprofit or for a major corporation that contributes time, merchandise and money to sick children, endangered species, great art or something else you care about. 7. Work hard: An internship is a chance to show how you can add value to the organization, so build your personal brand from day one. It’s a good move to treat an internship like an interview, and always remember that you don’t see everyone who sees you. Many people prefer an internship where you get to make decisions from the beginning, work with real brands you’ve already heard of, work with a multicultural group of driven people and earn more money for more effort. Davis’ company is a global consumer goods leader in health, hygiene and home products, the portfolio of which includes iconic brands such as Clearasil, Mucinex, Lysol and Woolite. According to Randy Bolenbaugh, Sales Analyst at RB, the company gives colleagues ownership of projects from day one. The people who work there have an intense drive for achievement and a desire to outperform wherever they focus. Said Bolenbaugh, “I was able to develop a better understanding of the business early in my internship and own my projects the same way other full-time employees on my team were doing. I challenged myself to overdeliver on everything I did, and that’s what made me stand out.” The multinational corporation—it has operations in over 60 countries, headquarters in the U.K., Singapore, Dubai and Amsterdam, and sales in almost 200 countries-is looking for highly skilled, ambitious professionals, new graduates and interns who want a fast-paced, challenging and rewarding career to fill positions in sales, marketing research and development.
