NEWS More than a sporting event Germantown HS graduate competes in Warrior Games BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR For Germantown High School graduate Jennifer Kyseth, the Warrior Games was more than about how she finished. The Warrior Games were held May 1116 at the US Olympic Training Center and the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. The event featured more than 200 wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans competing in various events. Kyseth placed second in the woman's combined recumbent cycle race, third in the women's 50 freestyle and second in the 100 meter freestyle reach "Since I had been training in the pool for a few months I had much higher expectations than I did for cycling. I did not have access to a recumbent bike prior to the games so I really had no idea what to expect," Kyseth said in an email. "All I knew is that I planned to go as hard and fast as I possibly could and if I could medal that would just be icing on the cake. I never thought I'd earn a silver. In the pool I discovered that I am not a sprinter but was Main St. • Germantown $ Your Next Party at Bubs BOOK YOUR HOLIDAY PARTY NOW! 25 Off Fire Department request: Germantown Trustee Terri Kaminski ask questions about the Fire Department request to purchase new records management software. Hours: Mon., Wed., Thurs. & Fri. 9am-5:30pm Tues. 9am-1:30pm • Sat. 8am-5pm Closed Sundays & Holidays CALL AHEAD 99 99 By Ann Bare "Oh dear," you think to yourself. "My sister gets cranky so easily. My best friend, although I love her dearly, is unpredictable and undependable. I have some friends from school, but we rarely talk and really only keep in touch through Facebook. My coworkers are becoming friendlier, but we are not what I would call friends yet. I'm getting married in six months and I want to have a stress-free wedding. Whom do I choose to be in my wedding party?" It's not always possible to select the "perfect" attendants. Personalities, traditions, expectations and cultural mores can influence a bride's choice of her maid or matron of honor and her bridesmaids. There are those who expect to be asked to be in your wedding; after all, you were in theirs. Your sisters and closest cousins would be natural choices-especially to Mom and sweet Auntie. Your best friend and you pinky-swore years ago that you would be at each other's side, but now her life decisions are not making her a suitable choice. The hard-todecide task just got more difficult. So whose wedding is it anyway? You want to look back on this day and have pleasant memories so make your decisions accordingly. What do you want to remember? Pasted smiles on an array of size 3 gals and tuxedoed handsome men flanking a radiant couple? The hope of having your wedding photo featured in the hometown paper's next bridal insert? Beautifully coiffed hairstyles and tiny ankles beneath tea-length dresses? What will really make your day happily memorable? Do you even have to have attendants? Centuries ago the role of the maid of honor or bridesmaid was to attend to the bride several days before her wedding; an additional role of attendants, both bridesmaids and groomsmen, was to dress similarly to the wedded couple in order to confuse evil spirits or jealous suitors who might try to sabotage the wedding or in some way harm the couple. Thankfully, the duties have become less risky and demanding and may be as simple as signing as a witness to the marriage. (Because state laws vary, verify how many witnesses' signatures are needed on the marriage certificate.) In selecting whom you will ask to stand up for you at your wedding, first share your concern with your fiance and consider his input. Then consider those who are dear to you and whom you respect. The person whom you select should see the opportunity as both an honor and a privilege to be standing at your side. Perhaps there is an older woman whose marriage you admire. Maybe your childhood friend would laugh with you before, during and after the ceremony, adding to a life full of meaningful experiences. Perhaps your sister has become the trusted confidante you have come to appreciate and she would be the "perfect" choice. Perhaps a male friend would serve as your bridesman (with your fiance's approval, of course). The choice is yours. The goal of your bridal party selection is to enhance your memorable day with favorable circumstances and experiences. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Germantown Village Board delayed action on purchasing new record management software for the Fire Department June 17 until it gets more information from staff. At the start of discussion Capt. Matt Karpinski explained that the department originally requested $31,000 to update its current Firehouse software, which included purchasing a “patch” between the Fire Department and Police Department software. While looking into the matter, the Police Department contacted Fire Department staff and informed them that ProPhoenix — the software used by the Police Department — had made significant changes to its fire record management software and asked that fire staff look at the revamped software. Karpinski said changes to the ProPhoenix software for Fire Department record management are “drastic” and show that the company became committed to fire department record management. As a result, the Fire Department recommended that the village go with the ProPhoenix option because of the benefits of having one software system be used by the Fire and Police Departments. The ProPhoenix system will cost approximately $76,496 while the village will receive a $17,350 discount for a final price of $59,146. Annual support and maintenance will cost $7,924.70, according to information provided to the village by ProPhoenix. Karpinski explained the difference is between adding on to current software and going to a completely new system. “Yes, this is a significant increase but the benefits we believe outweigh the cost,” Karpinski said. When asked, Village Administrator David Schornack said there isn’t any money in the budget for the request and “we would have to do some looking around.” Schornack said the benefit would be having the same software, which would allow for better communication between the Fire and Police Department systems. Karpinski said there’s $63,000 in the capital budget for upgrading heart monitors, which the Fire Department decided to delay a year. Karpinski later confirmed that it will cost more than $63,000 to replace the heart monitors if done later. When asked by Trustee Jeff Werderman about the downside of doing nothing, Karpinski said the Fire Department can’t share information with the Police Department because of the different software, and a “bridge” is required. In addition, the electronic patient care recorded software is no longer supported, and that it is now just Germantown Fire Department Capt. Matt Karpinski answers questions about a request for new records management software June 17. Photo by Thomas J. McKillen being sustained. Trustee Terri Kaminski said if the village doesn’t have the funds now, the village should make the item a capital item for the next budget year. Kaminski said she had too many questions about the request and wanted more information. Kaminski requested a range of costs for items. “I feel like I’m in the middle of a shell game here tonight where everything we approved before in some of these little shells and they are all being shifted around and it’s making me a little bit disappointed, a little bit anxious because why did we go through that budget process — painfully — for four months,” Kaminski said. Kaminski said she wanted information from the Police Department and information technology staff about the request. Trustee Art Zabel first made a motion to go ahead with the new software and then have village staff come back to the board to explain how the budget would be adjusted to pay for them item. Werderman said Police Department staff should explain the benefit of both departments having the same software. “I think if we do it now we can realize some savings. I think it has to be done, whether it’s now or six months I guess that’s up for each of us to decide,” Werderman said. Trustee Jeff Hughes made an amendment that the village staff present a plan at the next board meeting with how the software purchase will be financed. The board approved the amendment and the final motion. Photo by Thomas J. McKillen. Prep baseball: Germantown rallies to beat Slinger Slinger was on the wrong end of a Germantown rally as the Warhawks scored six runs in the fourth inning on the way to a 10-9 win June 18. Slinger held a 5-2 lead after three innings and scored three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. But Germantown followed six runs in the fourth inning — with four coming from a grand slam by Blake Fleischman — and single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Slinger added one run in the seventh inning before Germantown closed out the win. Afterward, Germantown remained in first place in the North Shore Conference with a 6-1 record and a 8-4 overall mark. Germantown opened the week with a 14-2 win at Cedarburg June 17. Menomonee Falls split the first two games of last week, losing to West Allis Central June 17 3-1 but then rebounding with a 7-4 win at Oak Creek. Against Central, Menomonee Falls allowed two runs in the fifth inning after scoring its lone run in the previous inning. Against Oak Creek, Menomonee Falls scored six of its runs in the fourth inning. Michael Bowe pitched five innings for the win. Following the Oak Creek game, Menomonee Falls was third in the Greater Metro Conference with a 8-5 conference record and a 12-7 overall mark. Hamilton was seventh in the Greater Metro with a 6-7 record and a 10-8 overall mark following a 4-3 win over Arrowhead June 19 in a game that went 10 innings. Hamilton opened the week with an 11-4 loss to Marquette but rebounded with a 3-0 win over West Allis Central the next day. The board would have been purchased through using $8,000 originally budgeted for a forcible entry trainer and $1,052 would have been covered by Act 102 funds. The board was split on the request 4-4, with Trustee Al Vanderheiden not present. A tie motion defeats a request. During discussion, Trustee Art Zabel said he could see the need for the forcible entry trainer to enter businesses and homes during an emergency situation. “That’s what we actually budgeted for, we didn’t budget for a SmartBoard. To me, that’s the difference,” Zabel said. Trustee Mel Ewert replied that the village is not saving any money through rejecting the motion. “We’re giving the Fire Department something they want, that they said would better serve them,” Ewert said in supporting the Fire Department request. Trustee Shane Daniels noted that during the budgeting process, the Village Board asked the Fire Department to prioritize the items they wanted, and the department chose the forcible entry trailer. He said agency officials later talked with their staff and decided the SmartBoard was preferred. “I can tell you firsthand if you’re having a fire and need to get in the door, we’re going in the door — we’re going to get in the door whether we have the forcible trainer or not,” Daniels said. He added that the Fire Department “knows best how to spend their money” and supported the SmartBoard request. Fire Department Capt. Matt Karpinski said that following the budget meeting, department officials did more research regarding the SmartBoard and shared it with Fire Department staff. He said the department was going to bring it up at future meetings but capital items were not discussed at later budget meetings. Trustees Daniels, Ewert, Jeff Hughes and Jeff Werderman supported the request while Village President Dean Wolter joined trustees Terri Kaminski, Zabel, and David Baum in opposition. —By Thomas J. This old gymnast's body doesn't like to do anything fast, it seems, but I can swim long distances just fine." Kyseth is a 1995 graduate of Germantown High School who currently resides in Edmond, Okla. She is a retired Air Force major and had served in the Air Force for 13.5 years. Kyseth crashed in 2005 while snowboarding in Cold Lake, Ont. Three years later she began to experience severe back and leg pain and was ultimately diagnosed with torn and herniated discs in her lower back. She subsequently chose to have them removed and have the vertebrae surgically fused. After continuing to experience pain, Kyseth sought help and eventually found an Air Force recovery care coordinator who put her in touch with the Air Force Wounded Warrior program. From there she participated in a adaptive sports camp in Texas. "That's where I fell in love with the recumbent trike. I decided to try out for the 2013 Warrior Games team and began seriously training in the pool in February," Kyseth said. Kyseth noted that the games were more than how the athletes finished in the compe- tition. "Competing in the Warrior Games gave me a goal — something to aspire to and something to be a part of that was bigger than myself or my own problems. While there, it wasn't about what was wrong with us but instead was more so about what we were still capable of achieving," she said in the email. "I watched my teammate Marty, a below the knee amputee, swim a 50 meter faster than I could even dream of doing so myself. I watched a guy with no legs and one arm complete a 100 meter race — he never slowed down or even hinted at giving up. It wasn't about just cheering on the people who came in first. The folks who got the most love were those who struggled just to finish. I'd never heard a group of people scream so hard for the guy who came in last. I lost count of how many times my eyes welled up with tears during the games.” She then added: "All of us have been through so much — for some more than I can even imagine. The fact that we decided to put our problems aside and be there is the biggest victory of all. The overwhelming feelings of joy, hope and perseverance are just unreal and I hope to participate at least once more in my lifetime."
