With our wide range of health-related programs, you’ll gain access to a variety of health care areas and get a leg up on the competition when entering the workforce. 1 careers in health sciences denTaL assisTing (LeveLs i and ii) – a one-year Ontario College Certificate program, completed in 10 months, prepares students to be entry-level practitioners. Dental assistants provide clinical chairside care, intra-oral care, radiography, oral health care promotion, laboratory work and business administration. Classroom learning is combined with clinical experience in Fanshawe’s state-of-the-art dental clinic, as well as the simulation and dental clinics at the Schulich School of Dentistry, The University of Western Ontario. There is also a community placement adding real-world experience. medicaL radiaTion TechnoLogy – a three-year Ontario College Advanced Diploma program. Radiological technologists provide imaging which is essential in the diagnosis and treatment of many illnesses and injuries. While general radiography (x-rays) remains the primary duty of technologists, their responsibilities have increased to include more complex procedures such as computed tomography (CT), digital imaging, gastrointestinal studies and imaging of the circulatory system such as angiography. In addition to academic courses and lab work, there is also a 52-week, full-time hospital placement beginning in January of your second year. denTaL hygiene – a two-year Ontario College Diploma program. Dental hygienists are oral health care professionals who provide a variety of services ranging from education, health promotion, administration and research to preventive and therapeutic clinical therapy. Utilizing an individualized process of care model, dental hygienists assess, plan, implement and evaluate the diverse needs of each client/patient. A case study approach is used to integrate the theory and hands-on components of the curriculum. Learning is enhanced through the use of simulation and clinical facilities at the Schulich School of Dentistry, The University of Western Ontario. nursing – a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree. Fanshawe College and The University of Western Ontario (Western) offer this collaborative BScN program. The curriculum is humanistic and holistic with a variety of learning opportunities where each student is respected as an individual with unique experiences and goals. Students study at Fanshawe for two years before joining their classmates at Western for the third and fourth years of the program. In the final semester of year four, each student is partnered with a Registered Nurse for a 12-week, full-time clinical practicum experience. The resources of both Fanshawe and Western are available to you throughout your studies. emergency TeLecommunicaTions – a 15-week Ontario College Certificate program, with two intakes each year, that prepares students to enter the field of emergency response as a fire, ambulance or police dispatcher. In addition to emergency services, graduates also find work in security centres, hospital dispatch and working with first-response teams. paramedic – a two-year Ontario College Diploma program. Paramedics are skilled emergency professionals who perform life-saving techniques, administer drugs and transfer critically ill patients safely and quickly. Paramedics must lift patients and equipment in challenging spaces demanding physical strength and conditioning. All students entering this program have some post-secondary education and many have obtained Fanshawe’s Pre-Health Science Certificate, significantly enhancing the likelihood of an offer of admission. In the second month, you will be working in an ambulance with paramedics. Time on the job increases throughout the program until, in the final semester, you have a full-time internship with a practicing paramedic. FiTness and heaLTh promoTion – a two-year Ontario College Diploma program leading to a career as a fitness and health consultant. You’ll work with groups or one-on-one offering evaluation and training techniques designed to help people achieve physical health and overall well-being. Fanshawe provides a solid background in exercise design and prescription, health promotion and administration, human relations and selfdevelopment. Graduates work in fitness clubs, rehabilitation centres, sporting goods stores, nutrition related retail stores, or are self-employed. They also work at youth agencies, sports clubs, resorts and in fitness programs offered by business and industry. This program is a great platform for continued post-secondary education at the university level in physical education or kinesiology. personaL supporT Worker – this one-year Ontario College Certificate program is completed in 30 weeks and is offered in London, Simcoe, St. Thomas and Tillsonburg. As a personal support worker, you will observe and respond to the needs of clients in long-term care facilities, retirement homes, in home-care and hospital settings. You will assist people with the tasks of daily living, help make them comfortable and keep them safe. This program is also available on a part-time basis in London and may be in other locations, depending on demand. 2 www.fanshawec.ca/health pharmacy Technician – a two year Ontario College Diploma program. Pharmacy Technicians work collaboratively with other health care professionals in various pharmacy practice settings. The curriculum provides you with in-depth knowledge and practical skills for prescription processing; self care product demonstrations; sterile compounding; non-sterile compounding; inventory management and pharmacy business management practices. As part of a newly regulated health care profession, you may work in a busy community pharmacy with frequent customer interactions; in a hospital pharmacy interacting with pharmacy team members, nursing staff and other professionals; or in an institutional pharmacy providing medications and supplies to patients in residential and long term care facilities. Pharmacy Technicians are accountable for ensuring accuracy in both the preparation and final release of prescription products. In addition to classroom and lab activities, students gain hands-on experience in both community and hospital/institutional pharmacy practice. pre-heaLTh science – a one-year Ontario College Certificate program. With a focus on the science foundations necessary for success in health care disciplines, you will gain an appreciation of professional roles and responsibilities. Pre-Health Science students who achieve a ‘B’ in every course are eligible for admission consideration to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) collaborative program with Fanshawe College and The University of Western Ontario. Students who excel in the Pre-Health Science program are also positioned to apply for any Fanshawe College Health Science career program. The Pre-Health Science program is an excellent way to establish a record of post-secondary success, in preparation for a career in Nursing and/or the Health Sciences. respiraTory Therapy – a three-year Ontario College Advanced Diploma program. Most Respiratory Therapists work in the acute care setting within hospitals to provide various levels of support to patients who are having difficulty breathing. For example, children with asthma, premature infants whose lungs have not matured, or victims of trauma who are unable to support their breathing due to their injuries. You may choose to work in the home-care setting, providing oxygen to patients suffering from chronic lung disease or within diagnostic labs testing lung function, exercise tolerance on the heart or sleep studies. The first two years of the program combine theoretical learning with hands-on lab. The third year is experiential learning in clinical practicum. Respiratory Therapists are recognized and supported members of the health care team and work one-on-one with patients every day. pracTicaL nursing – a two-year Ontario College Diploma program leading to a career as a Practical Nurse. The humanistic, caring curriculum provides you with the knowledge, skills, and theoretical foundations needed to provide holistic care to clients of all ages. Extensive clinical opportunities, in a wide variety of settings, provide a strong foundation for clinical practice. Graduates will work as autonomous health care practitioners in community, acute care, or long term care facilities. www.fanshawec.ca/health 3 GRADUATE CERTifiCATE PROGRAMS advanced care paramedic – a 45-week Ontario College Graduate Certificate program designed to enhance your skill set so you can perform an expanded set of controlled medical acts to patients suffering from serious medical and traumatic emergencies. This specialized training will allow you to better manage life-threatening situations, increasing the range of skills you can offer to employers, and the level of care you can offer to patients. You’ll develop advanced assessment, critical thinking, and decision-making skills, and be prepared to perform invasive therapeutic interventions in the pre-hospital environment. Broaden your career opportunities with specialized, advanced training. emergency managemenT – in this 19-week Ontario College Graduate Certificate program, graduates are engaged in activities in the area of emergency and disaster management. The program reflects the work that emergency managers must be able to perform on a regular basis within the framework of appropriate emergency management legislation. Students will be equipped with the necessary skills to address key areas of emergency management from disaster preparedness, coordination and management of emergency events escalating to catastrophes, hazards, risk assessment, terrorism, mitigation/prevention, preparedness, response and recovery. This program is delivered in a blended in-class/online delivery format for students who can commit one day per week in-class and who are also self-motivated to complete the extensive online learning that is required. Graduates would obtain positions within the business/industry and public sectors. Positions are likely to be found in larger companies and municipalities, with duties relating to emergency management planning and liaising with community partners. anesThesia assisTanT – a 38-week Ontario College Graduate Certificate program. Anesthesia Assistants work under the supervision of the anesthesiologist and assist in the care of patients during general, regional and local anesthesia. Graduates use their specialized, sought-after skills to work in hospital operating rooms, post-operative care, labour and delivery, emergency and intensive care areas across Canada. The Anesthesia Assistant program offers a flexible delivery format whereby you can attend classes one day each week during the first two terms, to accommodate your existing professional work commitments. The third term is devoted to clinical placement. magneTic resonance imaging – a one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate program designed for the practicing Medical Radiation Technologist in the Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound Radiography or Radiation Therapy discipline who wishes to expand their career to include Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Graduates of this program will be prepared to write the MRI National Certification Examinations as set by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT). A Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist is a valuable member of the health care team who uses noninvasive magnetic fields and radiofrequency pulses to produce high quality images to aid in the diagnoses of disease and injury. After a two semester flexible didactic delivery, the student will commence a full-time 16-week clinical practicum at an affiliated hospital site. The clinical practicum will then be concluded with a twoweek intensive consolidation and review on-campus, to prepare the student for their certification exams. While the contact hours will be compressed in this fashion, the student will be expected to commit to rigorous independent study, with assigned readings, collaborative group work, online discussions and assignment submissions comprising a significant component of the educational experience. 4 www.fanshawec.ca/health admission requirements *The minimum requirement for admission to all post-secondary programs is an Ontario Secondary School Diploma with courses from the College (C), University (U), University/College (U/C) or Open (O) stream or equivalent or mature student with the stated academic requirements.
