Instructional Design Plan Betty Hustead June 7, 2011 Dakota Ridge High School (DRHS) Vision Statement: Dakota Ridge High School continually strives for a school based upon an exceptional community that promotes extraordinary learning, expanded opportunities, and above all, success for all students. DRHS Mission Statement: Dakota Ridge High School aspires to help all members of its community develop a balance between and synergy from four basic human needs: the need to live, the need to love, the need to learn and the need to leave a legacy. Therefore, we consciously commit ourselves to demonstrating: The physical need "To Live" in an environment that is clean, safe and business-like; a vibrant place which inspires a healthy attitude in its community of learners. The social need "To Love" self and others with respect, high expectations, trust and decency; to belong to and work as a responsible member of the community. The mental need "To Learn" by continuously seeking and accepting challenging opportunities that expand our abilities and motivate others to make full use of their abilities. The spiritual need "To Leave a Legacy" by establishing a sense of meaning and purpose to our existence through contributions to our community and to the lives of others. International Baccalaureate program requirements Creativity, action, service (CAS) The CAS requirement is a fundamental part of the program and takes seriously the importance of life outside the world of scholarship, providing a refreshing counterbalance to academic studies. The above statements are a very large reason why I chose the Relay for Life communication issue for my instructional design plan. Our school and community try to expand the students’ learning experiences outside of the school. We encourage them to learn as much about themselves as they learn educationally. Allowing the students to become caring, empathetic, respectful, leaders and life-long learners, make well-rounded individuals. A student that is well rounded will succeed in life. Relay for Life is an event held annually for the American Cancer Society. A small number of students and staff began the tradition of supporting this event in 2009 – 2010. A larger group participated in 2011, but due to the process of learning how to set up and promote this event for the entire school to choose to participate, a major problem was identified: how to communicate the information quickly and easily. During review of the completed process this year, the need for change was very apparent. The first step was to ask for feedback, both positive and negative, from students and staff. Nearly everything I was feeling about the communication process was duplicated in the comments made by the participants. It was suggested by several to create a website for easy access to all of the forms and information needed for this event. This would be a great place to communicate with everyone involved. The time to update for the owner of the site should be minor once it is created. The team captains and teachers would have access to help add additional agenda items, calendar items, pictures and other information. The set up for the site is outlined below. Overall, it will have pages set up by category: information, students, parents, teachers, community members, volunteers, and fundraising. Forms and some other items that overlap categories will be found on each site or will have a link to the appropriate page. This will be a never ending site, because information, forms, calendars, scheduling events and other parts will always be changing. Implementation will begin when school starts up in the fall of 2011. During a staff meeting, teachers will be given training by observing a demonstration of how to navigate the site. Teachers that will be sponsors will be able to meet in a small group or individually if they have questions. They will also be responsible for sharing this information with their students. The process should be simple enough to not need any more training, but feedback, questions, ideas, or concerns the teachers have throughout the year, will be answered, evaluated and addressed promptly. The ultimate objective is to have communication work well enough, that each year we will have an increase in participation and funds raised for the Relay for Life event. This will be evaluated by tracking and charting the number of hits to the new site (per category), the number of participants, and the amount of money donated. Since this is the first year for the site, the May 2012 numbers will be used as a baseline for future years. Participation and the money raised over the past two events will be added to the statistics for May 2012 to see if the website was effective for communication this first year. If you are interested in seeing how this plan will come together in more detail, please read the outline below. Relay for Life Instructional Design Plan I. Analyze - How do I make the information regarding the Relay for Life Event (RFL) easier to access by the community, staff, students and parents in a timely manner so everyone knows what is going on, what is required to attend, what deadlines will be followed, allowing more participation and the ability to raise the most money possible? A.
