Exterior View of the Home
A residential remodeling project located in Seattle, Washington for a young family with two small daughters. The family
loves exploring nearby downtown Seattle, would rather bike than walk and want to capture their Asian heritage, while
blending it with their modern American life style. The family wanted a space to accommodate their young daughters,
while being adult enough to entertain friends and family. The scope of the project included the living room, dining room,
kitchen and master suite, all located on the second level of the home.
Green design elements in the project included wall coverings made from recycled paper, recycled glass counter tops,
bamboo flooring in all spaces, except the kitchen. All tiles contain either recycled material or can be recycled if demoed.
The appliances and fixtures are energy and water saving.

The commercial project was for the Graphic Images graphic design firm.
The project was a study in BIM using Revit to create the design, plans and
images for the design. The project included a custom designed reception
desk using Revit to build out the concept. The project included selecting
furniture and finishes for the entire office, including private offices,
conference room, break room and work areas.

Floor and Furniture Plan of Residence
The project for the Harrison Family was an extensive remodel of their home in an Art Deco theme. The family consists of
Jeff, a private detective, his wife Helen, a choreographer and dance instructor, their six year old son and Jeff’s father. The
family asked the designer to remodel the living room, media room, foyer, Jeff’s office and entry way.

The family loves Jazz music, entertaining friends and family, and the bright colors and geometric lines of Art Deco design.
Jeff and Helen wanted the designer to add an Art Deco style window in the foyer and include space planning for a future
powder room off the foyer. Security was essential, due to Jeff’s line of work and the fact that his office would be located in
the family’s residence. The family already had existing pieces of antique Art Deco furniture and wanted additional pieces to
be purchased by the designer.

Funky Chicken Market Research Project
Design Concept for the Funky Chicken Market Research Firm
Upscale, modern and eclectic would describe the
proposed interior design for the Funky Chicken Market Research
Firm in Sausalito, California. The design will incorporate state of
the art technology and a collaborative arrangement of employee
offices and work spaces. The design will include retro elements of
mid-century modern furniture, balanced with natural elements of
wood, plants, stone and water. The natural elements will be
balanced with bold, modern hues of red, orange and yellow to
provide warmth and energy, while blue and green will provide a
sense of calm and relaxation. The company’s funky chicken logo
will feature prominently in the lobby and other public areas to
convey to visitors the company’s dynamic attitude.

Logo and Branding for Client
The Funky Chicken Market Research Office was originally
done as part of my ID230 Office Design class. The project
was revisited during ID440 Construction Documents to
perfect and expand on the original project. The basic
design concept was retained, but improvements were
made to demonstrate an increased knowledge of
construction documents. Additional changes included
changing out the gypsum ceiling and lighting for a grid
ceiling in a colorful, random mix of patterned tiles and grid
lighting. The ramp flooring was changed and railing on the
ramp and stairs was also changed to a more modern steel
and wood rail.

The sculpture is whimsical and conveys the
company’s ideals of thinking, and thinking
outside of the box. The child examining the
world through a magnifying glass conveys
an image of discovery, curiosity and a
quest for learning. Exactly what the
company is doing for a corporate client to
market their products. The statue
measures 48” H x 34” L x 34” W.
The statue will be displayed on the outdoor
patio area to inspire both visitors and
employees to be curious and never stop
striving to learn!

Modern, Japanese, Zen based design, inspired by the natural elements of wind, water, fire and Earth describes the
living space for Ichiro Connor’s apartment. The design plan utilizes the seven principles of Japanese design, which are
based on the Buddhist concept that everything in the universe, without exception, is in a constant state of flux. The
seven principles are simplicity, imbalance, austerity, natural, subtle profound, calm and unworldly. The apartment
was designed to be ADA compliant to accommodate the client, who is paraplegic. The client leads an active life style,
plays sports, works out regularly and entertains friends and family. The client is very close to his nieces and nephews,
who come visit and stay with him regularly. For this reason, he asked that the design also be child friendly.
Green elements in the design are bamboo flooring, energy saving appliances, water conserving plumbing fixtures,
and kitchen cabinets and numerous furniture pieces constructed of reclaimed Korean barn wood from Green Tea
Designs.

The project was a complete remodeling of my horribly outdated
Master Suite. The layout was completely reconfigured. A shower
room was created where the walk-in closet was located and
replaced with a larger walk-in closet on the opposite side of the
room. Old shiny brass fixtures were replaced with oiled bronze
fixtures, antique lighting fixtures blend with modern LED lights
for an eclectic mix of old and new.

The Peppermint Hippo Themed Restaurant
The project was completed for my ID353 Commercial
Design class. The goal was to create a themed
restaurant. Research was done on themed restaurants
and determine how design impacts the atmosphere,
popularity and success of the restaurant.
Research concluded that those restaurants that last
have other offerings besides just food. Retail and
entertainment is crucial to the longevity of these types
of restaurants. Based on research, the plan included an
ice cream parlor and small retail space to sell local
products, including hand crafted items and art from
local artists.

Rendering of Children’s Dining Area of Restaurant
The theme for the Peppermint Hippo was selected because the hippo is the official mascot for Hutto, Texas where the
restaurant will be located. The legend is that a circus train stopped to reload on water and coal, as well as water their
animals on a stop in Hutto, Texas during the early 1900’s. One of the hippos escaped from her handlers and the
town’s people took great delight in watching the handlers getting their hippo wrangled out of Cotton Creek and
loaded back onto the train. The legend of the escaped hippo led to the town adopting the hippo as their official
mascot. The theme will incorporate the town’s beloved hippo mascot and the circus that brought the strange animals
to the town at the turn of the twentieth century.

About the Designer
My name is Tracy Tuma and I reside in Austin, Texas. I was born and raised in Columbus,
Nebraska and attended nursing school in Omaha, Nebraska. After graduation I headed south, to escape
the harsh winters. I moved to Corpus Christi, Texas in 1985 and relocated to Austin, Texas in 1988. I
married my husband Weldon in 2004. I have two adult step-children and a grandson. We have built a
wonderful life together filled with travels to visit our families, visiting our favorite cities and finding new
places to explore. We are pet lovers and share our home with two cats and two small dogs.

I am starting my Interior Design career later in life, after a thirty plus career as a registered nurse. I have always loved
being creative, whether sewing, painting, fixing up the houses I’ve lived in or cooking wonderful food. At forty-five, I decided to
return to college to obtain my B.S. in Interior Design so that I could spend my working life doing what I truly love. Although I am
entering the design field later in life, I feel that my experience as a nurse, and general life experiences, gives me an understanding
of human nature, how to listen to people and design spaces that are specific to their personal taste, functional needs and lifestyle.
I am a student member of IIDA.
My hobbies include sewing, creating art, crafting, exploring vintage and antique shops, attending theatre and music
performances and visiting museums/historical locations. I have a subdued sense of adventure! I love to go off the beaten path and
really explore the places I visit. I prefer the local café over the chain restaurant, the local shops and farmer’s market over the big
box store or super market. I enjoy finding the unique people and places that bring life to my community or the places I visit
because I find the experience more personal and fulfilling.
One of my favorite parts of traveling is shopping for local products or items that we will give as gifts to our family and
friends for Christmas or birthdays. When I see a unique item that I feel will be the perfect gift for a specific family member or
friend, I purchase it. One of our favorite traditions that Weldon and I have started for our kids is purchasing a special Christmas
ornament for each of them when we travel. This is our way of helping them build a nice collection of Christmas ornaments for
their tree, while building memories and traditions with their own families.
My Design Philosophy
My design philosophy is that good design belongs to everyone, regardless of status or income. I
once heard a young entrepreneur being interviewed about product design and I will never forget his
statement. “Poor people can’t afford bad design.” Why? Because people with fixed incomes can’t afford to
replace an item that is poorly designed, breaks easily or simply doesn’t function well to meet their needs. I
hold that belief about interior design. If you have great design it can be timeless, in both function and
durability. I feel like there is usually a solution, even on a limited budget.

I want to know as much as I can about my client(s), as I do the physical space of the design
project. I want to know what they need, their lifestyle, what they want from the design and most
important, what is it about the current state of the space that they dislike and why it isn’t meeting their
needs in terms of form and function. My ultimate goal is for my clients to have a well designed space and
feel that I truly listened to them and met their needs. I also feel that it is my responsibility to advise clients
when I feel their wishes or desires won’t work in a space and provide them with a solid explanation for my
reasoning. However, in the end, it is the client’s space, it is their money that they are spending and so long
as their choices don’t violate codes, or create a safety hazard, it is my responsibility to honor their wishes.
I am committed to re-use, re-purpose and re-cycling when possible. I love spending time
exploring antique and vintage shops for old furniture, fabrics and accessories that I can incorporate into my
designs. I have several old pieces in my home, from lighting fixtures to furniture that have been repurposed and refinished into wonderful design pieces. I am also committed to being as green as possible
when designing. In today’s world, there really aren’t excuses for using finishes, materials or products that
contain harmful chemicals or pollutants. I believe in using products that are of the highest quality, within
the constraints of the budget. Researching products and finishes can yield surprising results about durability
and quality vs. product cost. Better quality doesn’t always mean the most costly item is the best choice.
