London’s ‘Eastside’ is awash with hidden gems and ‘must see’ individual retailers. Often described as ‘a fascinating melting pot of different cultures and emerging talents’, the East End is a haven of creativity and innovation. Its eclectic mix of designers, artists, jewellers, milliners, glassworks, haberdashers, tailors, booksellers, and a perfumery has expanded even further this year, with new businesses opening up regularly. It’s a real contrast to the dynamic retail environment and 21st century skyline at Canary Wharf. Add to this all the colour, spectacle and characters of the famous long-established markets at Brick Lane, Petticoat Lane, Roman Road and Spitalfields as well as Columbia Road’s famous Sunday flower market, and you’ll find East London has something for everyone! The East End goes from strength to strength. It continues to attract new talent, restaurants, bars and health practitioners - you can find anything from aduki beans, aromatherapy, homeopathy or massage through to funky and distinctive hair salons, tapas bars and wine tasting. Whether you’re looking for something innovative from an up-and-coming designer, something cheap, chic or unusual or an exclusive for that very special occasion, you’ll find it all in London’s Eastside with the help of the Quirky Shopping Guide. 2 Columbia Road Market 1 Brick Lane Market Columbia Road Market Old Spitalfields Market Petticoat Lane Market See enlarged area map 2 29 76 5 83 58 45 86 92 1 24 93 88 69 59 71 1 1 34 00 1 75 05 Columbia Road Market 43 99 70 61 80 74 19 57 108 72 53 121 95 66 107 68 10 8 79 96 31 118 142 67 63 116 42 90 111 23 115 34 36 102 DL 140 125 3 Canary Wharf Area 49 129 24 138 78 85 91 89 15 16 114 20 21 137 33 150 51 52 9 82 62 17 143 97 30 77 136 94 22 98 84 47 40 65 14 26 141 11 R Shopping Mall How to use the guide Using the Quirky Shopping Guide is simple. Don’t forget to check parking restrictions even at the weekends – you don’t want a great day of bargain-hunting spoiled by a parking fine. For a more relaxed day avoiding the crowds, pick a weekday and include refreshment breaks – the perfect excuse to try out some of the great eateries in the East End! See page 79 for suggestions. Look out for special offers, end-of-lines and oneoffs. As well as the many shops and markets in this Guide, galleries and museums often have shops which stock cards, prints, books and unusual gifts. Give yourself time to shop around – many bargains found have been due to putting in the legwork. Opening hours vary considerably, so if there’s somewhere you particularly want to visit, phone before you go, and head there first to ensure you don’t run out of time later. Take a light bag which zips across the top, and, as with any busy public place, tuck your wallet or purse down inside it, well out of sight. Most of all, enjoy your day and come back soon!
